Performance of SMK HPBT 190 gr

Good morning,

I'm thinking of the possibility to test this bullets, the Sierra HPBT 190 gr in my 300WM rifle for long range shooting. What experience do you have with their accuracy? What is the maximum distance you have shot with it?

Thanks!
These 3 shots were my first 3 shots at 1000 yards in 20 years. From my 300 wm Rem 700 LR with 190 gr smk's and the accuracy load from Seirra manual (supposedly the Federal GMM recipe) with RL22. The load shot well. But I went to a 208 gr amax. The 208 amax starts ~100 fps slower @ 2882 fps but is faster at 1000 yards then the 190 smk, due to its higher bc. With the 208 amax I went to H1000.
A 208-215 gr high bc bullet (Berger) with H1000 is my suggestion for a 10T 300 wm, for target shooting. For hunting I use a 200 gr LRX with H1000, Peterson or Norma brass, and cci 250's. But the Barnes rep recommended a 175 gr LRX for a 300 wm.

I used it a ton in my F-Class .300 RSAUM it was amazingly accurate and performed well at 1k I don't think you could go wrong with it for your .300 WM Cheers

I agree that for a .300 WM it is an ok bullet for 1000 yards, but not a mile like the OP is wanting to shoot.

I've never run the 190gr SMK but my Savage 112 in 300WM loves the Berger 210 VLD. Run them just under 3000fps. Held sub MOA out to 1600yds.
Have the same rifle... mine likes the 178 amax have not tried the 210's yet.. what is your barrel length and twist? i never got around to asking Savage yet....

Been running Nosler 220 gr custom competion in my 300 win mag with 10 twist with excellent results.

Thank you for your excellent answer! I always wanted to try the HPBT 230gr, but due to stability reasons it requires 1:8 twist and it was impossible for me to find a 300WM with such twist.
I've never tried HPBT 220 gr either. Do you think that 1:10 twist is enough? It doesn't make sense to go to very high ballistic coefficient bullets if your rifle can't make them stable. Because that also reduces the effective ballistic coefficient.
Have you considered a custom barrel for the 300WM where you specify the barrel length, twist rate etc. A match grade barrel in 1:8 twist for that caliber should not be that difficult to find.
