I was just going to build on the other thread by did not want to hyjack it.

I was looking into this scope to shoot up to 600 yards or so, I shoot alot, and group well up to this range but I have no great way to dial it in, I played with leupolds LR reticle but its just not very ideal for every setup,

I was looking into this scope and brownells aftermarket turrent that you scribe your own marks in for a particular load (in itself a bit limiting)

Any advise, or other resources that I can read up on the subject??

thanks again!!!

kind of

Actually still looking at just the VXIII, mainly because of the price tag difference, then having just a elevation turret installed

Mainly its a cost thing, and its the elevation adjustments that I'm really after..

man, only have the last 6 posts, a search may have solved this

589.00, according to leupolds website, I guess its not that much of a difference, I'm going with the mark 4, sorry for the extra post but sure glad I got this figured out!!

I had a target turret put on a 4.5-14x40mm Vari-X III about 6-7 years ago, by the Leupold Custom Shop. It only cost $60 then, but has been priceless to me. I've had the scope close to ten years now and never had a problem with it. I shot the barrel out of a Remington Sendero in 7mm RM with that scope on it and now have it mounted on a 700P in that caliber. I exclusively used the 150gn NBT with 67gn RL22, CCI BR2 for deer, varmints and targets and this combo was amazing out to 600yds. That's all I ever asked it to do, but it did it well.

If I had to do it over again, knowing what I know now, I'd go with the Mk IV LRT (either 4.5-14 or 6.5-20), just because the adjustments are already there, plus you have the 30mm tube with extra internal adjustment (more MOA over the 1" tubes).

I have used the Leupold Dual Dovetail mounting system all my life because it's really tough and the two piece base/rings looked better than a one-piece system. Now, I'd go with the one-piece Picatinny/Weaver style with built-in MOA. They just make more sense and work! if you want or need to reach out touch something. Hope this makes sense and helps. If you will send me an email, I will send you two different 'turret wrap" programs that were done by others for a 308s. You can look at them and how they were done and then build your own turret wrap for your caliber and tape it to your knobs. It is cheap and easy and then when you decide to change bullets. loads or rifles you just cut off the turret wrap and tape on a new one. Some people even print them up on adhesive labels to avoid the scotch tape.

For distances of 600 yards a turret wrap will usually be accurate enough that temperature and moderate elevation effects can be ignored.

And I replyed via email. I will try again and try a different method. In teh meantime check your spam filter. There is not much difference between me and spam.:D

I put a Stoney Point (now Hornady) elevation turrent on my Leupold 4.5-14x50 Vari-X III scope. The cost of the turret was ~ $35 and I easily installed it myself. The scope is on an 'unbraked' 338 Lapua Mag. and works great. The clicks are repeatable and I can get to 850 yards from a 100 yard zero with one revolution of the turret. I can easily get to 1500 yards with the availabe adjustment in the scope. One day I'll upgrade to a MK4 or a Nightforce, but for now the VXIII works.
