Ole 270 comes back to life!

My first rifle was a 270 (still have it), it has crossed my mind to do one in a fast twist barrel. May have to do it, the bug keeps biting. Just need the money.

Thanks! It was one of those antelope hunts that turned into a coyote hunt. A small pack was hunting the same herd I was going after and this yote was sitting near their den looking at me at 528 yards when I sent the 175 Matrix VLD.

That is a solid 170 gr velocity at 2900. Elk killer for sure.

First rifle I got at 17 was a Ruger M-77. 270 shot the barrel out after 10 years and it sat in the safe. Decided to bring it back to life this year.
I took the old Barrel off and sent the action up to Mcgowen to have a 1:8 twist barrel put on with the 170 Berger in mind.
I wanted to be able to shoot everything including elk with no reserve. After 30 rounds of break in it is hammering.
Reg reamer with no freebore. Win brass, fed 210 primer, mag pro hunter powder 60.5 gr. .015 off the lands. 2900FPS.
The ole girl is back to life. My only regret is not doing my homework a little better to get some freebore. It is seated pretty deep but, it shoots.
No need to get all new components and make a 280 AI. Just get some 170 Bergers and light it up.

I started the long range game back in the 90s with a 270, but the best bullet available was the 135 grain SMK, it was limited so I switched to the 260 around 1998...now the 270 is viable again with newer bullet offerings it's on my list to own again

Wow I love that stock. The whole setup actually. I'm thinking maybe rather then waiting to shoot out this 20" barrel (on this new savage axis II Overwatch) and using up a bunch of hard to get supplies, I'll do what you have done. I'm thinking a 26" fluted barrel as it'll be a LRH rifle exclusively.

My wife's first rifle was in .270 caliber. That rifle is a very good shooter using .270 caliber 130-grain Hornady SST bullets. She is extremely pleased with her groups and I must say that the .270 caliber is a very flat shooter and an extremely accurate round.

Agreed! In my opinion and for more room, it would have been better. I have a couple of 270Wins with a little freebore that allows me to seat the bullets out and use more of the case's powder capacity. The same with a couple of 30-06's.

Years ago, I played with a 270 Gibbs, and I really enjoyed that rifle and cartridge. For the bullets of the day, I only used a 1/10 twist, but it was a fast and tight shooter. Before I grow too much older, I would like to build another 270 Gibbs with an 8 twist, but given the performance of modern powders and for simplicity, I may just settle for a fast twist, long throated 26" 270W or AI version.

Still have my dad's 270 Gibbs built on a pre-war Model 70 with a Canjar set trigger. Single hole groups @ 100 yards with 130 gr Sierra bullets. His elk slayer used a 150 gr Herters round nose bullet, not as accurate by layed down too many elk to count. Dad worked with Rocky Gibbs back in the day and provided a conduit to build a variety of "Poor Man's Magnums" in the 1950's for his buddies. 6.5 Gibbs, 270 Gibbs, 30 Gibbs (most popular, many built on 1903 Springfields about $18 through the Civilian Marksmanship Program) and 8mm Gibbs. When Remington introduced the 7mm Mag and Winchester introduced the 264 Win Mag and 300 Win Mag in the early 60's, the Gibbs option faded. Great rounds! All of them.

First time shooting 1000yds was with Tikka T3 .270, bone stock rifle, 6-12 scope.
The caliber proved itself to me that day and will never be overlooked again.
