Newbie Reloader with Questions

Something else to consider. The "touch number" you get if performing this action (in the first video) with new brass is relative to that new brass. As you fire the brass it will "grow" to fit the chamber and then that initial "touch number" will most likely be into the lands. I've found that @ 3 firings (depending on brand of brass) the brass has formed enough to use to find the lands again and give a fairly accurate/stable "touch number" to base corresponding measurements off of.

with a mag fed hunting rifle, you really have limits.
mag length is the biggie.
so pick a bullet and look and see what the difference is between mag length and touching the lands..
now decide it you want to stay with the bullet or look for something that may get you closer to the lands at mag length.
if you hunt short range, fat round nose bullets will be close to the lands and have excellent short range accuracy ( i have put 4 174's in one hole at 100 yds).
so pick an approach and work up a load.
hunting loads do not have to be target loads. look at hos you actually hunt and work on a functional load.
Just don't shoot VLD's and you won't have to worry about it. VLD's are sensitive to seating depth due to the secant ogive, non vld's have a much gentler slope into the lands due to the tangential ogive and thus are not so sensitive.

Also and very importantly the closer you seat a bullet to the lands the higher pressure you'll get from the same load and the step from no pressure signs to dangerous pressure is much shorter.

Especially for the novice shooter and reloader it's best and certainly safest to stay well off of the lands.
