Hunters should be equipped with both range finders and binoculars. I hate to carry more gear in the field than is absolutely necessary. First you find a suitable target with the binoculars, then you put the binoculars down and pick up the range finder to determine distance. Then you put the range finder down and scope the target. IMO, that's too much pickin' up and puttin' down.
Recommendation:
Bite the bullet (pun intended) and get a good set of range finder binoculars. Perhaps something like these: Bushnell - 12x 50mm
They'll cost you about $1200, they'll last a lifetime (if you take care of them) and you'll avoid finding yourself in the position of having mediocre gear that you later have to sell off to get what you truly needed in the first place.
Buying cheap gear, just to get started, is never (IMO) a good decision.
jekins- i should have said-" what make and model rifle/scope are you shooting". how far is your rifle accurate/capable to shoot ?? the range finder you get needs to range that far every time.
