New scope

I know they are a great product, but I won't use them for the same reason I dislike the 30-06 and Honda motorcycles. One uncle that thought those were the only things manufactured. He once started telling us he uses them because that's all the military has ever used lol

Ok, sorry, off topics derail.
Some folks can't see beyond the 80's and 90's. Leupold is the same old stuff in a fancy new package. That's why they haven't gotten any of my money in over 16 years.

I'm not referring to the 80's or 90's. I'm talking a company that makes a scope that is a good value for your dollar today. Today's VX lines and Mark lines are in many people's opinions, every bit as good as anybody else scopes in their price line. And Leupold backs their products very well, forever. They were doing it long before some of these other companies were. To my knowledge (and I may be wrong) but many of today's top scope companies have modeled their warranty in line with Leupold's, because they know that in doing that, they're making a product that will retain its value for a long time. They're not the 'same old stuff' that they were 30 years ago, if they were, they'd be out of business. I have scopes from many different makers, I'm happy with all of them. I don't own stock in any of the companies so really, I don't care what anybody thinks about any of these scopes, but saying that a scope maker like Leupold is nothing more than 30 year old technology in a fancy box takes away a bit of credibility in your opinion.

Have you actually used any of the newer Leupolds?
Based on your statement I'm guessing you haven't..
The MK5 HD's are fantastic scopes, I've compared them to the legendary NF NXS (which are also great) and it's quite a bit better in terms of glass, reticle, turrets, eye box, weight etc..
Tracks absolutely flawlessly as well

I'm having a 6.5x284 built and it should be ready in about 2-3 weeks. The last thing I need for it is a new scope. I have about $1200-$1300 to spend. What would guys go with?
Maybe a little more info would help:
  • Are you looking to hit a particular weight limit?
  • What distances are you looking to shoot?
  • FFP or SFP preference?
  • Mil/MOA preference?
  • Capped/locking/exposed turrets preference?
  • Any reticle preference (duplex/hash/tree/other)?
  • Any other info you could provide?

You obviously care enough to put in your $0.02... ;)

Yes. While I haven't owned any of the newer ones, I have shot through them on other people's guns. I never said they were bad optics...Just said they're still living on their name for most of their customer-base. I used to sell Leupold, and their warranty has always been top-notch. But their prices seem to be rising when their tech isn't. That goes for the old school models, as well.

You don't have to like my opinion, because it's my personal opinion, not your's.

I kind of like the tactical Bushnells, so I'm not sure if my opinion counts any way lol
I learned a long time ago that everyone's opinion is only worth anything to themselves, and anyone else who wants to put stock into what you have to say. So, don't worry what others think. If you like something, go for it.

I've been buying mostly Bushnell lately. Mostly based on personal preference. One Elite Tactical, two Engage (1" and 30mm), and a new Nitro FFP. All work well for my needs, but probably far below the class the OP is searching for.

I, personally, can NOT wait for the Nightforce NX8 2.5-20. It's a bit over your stated budget at $1950 but its 23 oz, FFP, Illuminated and 120 MOA of adjustment. By specs, it's my dream girl in scope terms. Might wanna hold out and save a little lunch money.
All the marketing materials that I've seen list weight at a smidge over 28 oz, and 110 MOA of adjustment. Not enough difference for me to care, but it may matter to others.

I'm not an expert, but I wouldn't be surprised by low magnification tunneling and/or a finiky parallax with this scope. Should still be a good option.
