New Savage 110 Ultralite with Proof CF Barrels

Yea I wish it had the bedding block.
Worth it for a little extra weight.
even if the rifle came in at 6.25 lbs or so would still be a winner in my opinion.
I don't doubt it will shoot as is without the bedding block.
Heck a $300 axis will shoot better than most people can in actual hunting field conditions.
I would want the bedding for durability and dependability more than an accuracy advantage

If it doesn't have it, it will have pillars though and then one could glass bed the lug and tang areas. Very easily done DIY and still will not add much weight at all. Has anyone called Savage yet to verify ACCUSTOCK or not?

Looks very nice for the price. Surprised at only a 2 round magazine capacity for the 6.5 prc, 300 wsm, and 28 nosler. All the non magnums have a 4 round capacity. Wonder if they will have some bigger aftermarket mags.

is my understanding correct that the floating head on the savage bolt makes this not so much of an issue?
It makes lug lapping unimportant but the action and barrel nut should be trued (squared up). Yea you can skim bed around the pillars and recoil lug but I like the stiffness of the bedding block with their factory stocks. Its a deal breaker for me, and I'm not gonna drop a bunch on an aftermarket stock when the gun should come with a bedding block. All my composite stocked savages have bedding blocks.

If they included a bedding block it would've been over 6lbs and then you'd have a whole nother bunch of internet folks complaining it's too heavy...gotta compromise somewhere and not everyone will be happy no matter what.

Don't you just love it when the little engine that could keeps innovating (accu-trigger, accu-stock, MPR etc.) at very reasonable prices and big green sets there with their finger up there nose.

You are so right, everything in life is a compromise you win some you loose some :). I guess I'm not so much complaining as the decision was made back during the design and build phase by savage. I knew in my heart that it was too light to have it, but I was hoping none the less. I'm sure it will be savage accurate, but $1200 is a lot for me to spend and I don't want to buy with any regrets. I was a savage man when they all came with Tupperware stocks (if they weren't laminated) and I dealt with it so they will NEVER loose me as a customer. In this case I will build my own carbon barrel savage, I have a trued action already the money will go towards a stock and barrel. Its all good for the little engine that's building a following GO Ron C.!) Dave

Dave,

I too am a big Savage fan. It's also situational like yours, you already have the action to build on. In addition, it is also relative, NSS sells a Savage 10 blueprinted (http://northlandshooterssupply.com/actions/savage/) for $589 and Proof Research carbon fiber blank barrel for ~$700 (https://www.evolvedballistics.com/shop/proof-barrels/proof-research-bolt-action-carbon-fiber.html) depending on the configuration. So you get the factory stock (~$50-$100) and chambering/installation (~$250-$300) for free. Something for end-users to consider in their decision making.

ADDED: Muzzle threading is an additional ~$100.

Good luck with your project. Cheers!

This is a really good point. Stocks are easy to upgrade down the road. It is an affordable way to get into carbon fiber.

Actually it's all about market place timing-- remington had the 700vsc, had a CA/krieger carbon barrel, hs precision composite stock offered in 223,22-250,&308 in 1999-2000 from their custom shop, sold for around 1200-1500 and was pretty light and most say under 1/2 moa, unfortunately it didnt sell well so it was a short run. Lightweight rifles weren't "all that" back then. I even saw a post from a guy that said he saw one for $900 new at a big r store back in '99. So apparantly rem beat out savage by 21 years but cf lightweight rifles weren't tacti-cool back then.

Agreed! Timing/proper implementation is everything . Any business plan/strategy is only as good when executed accordingly. Are you saying they did NOT do an effective market research and risk/SWOT analyses? :):D

Cheers!

Yea, see what ya mean FEENIX, proof pre fits are $830, blanks $700 plus chambering $85 and I do install and headspacing myself $785, so guess a carbon barrel isn't in my immediate future :( Oh well, always things to spend money on...still waiting on my co ax press and I need a good 4x16-40 scope for the gun I just finished. Decisions decisions...Dave

no, I'm saying they were ahead of the times-- CF barrels in 1999 were pretty new to the market--I'm not bashing Rem or savage (unlike some)
proof wasnt even around in 1999, they started in 2012, CA started with the CF barrels back in 1995 so basically rem was on the "cutting edge" so to speak
actually if we wanted to get real pickey, winchester had the fiberglass wrapped barrel on the win 59 back in 1960, so really they are the pioneer of lightweight fiber wrapped barrels

if you shop around, you can knock $50 off those proof prices also
