You have gotten lots of great advise; I will add my two cents. I love Wby cartridges- if only the brass did not suck so bad. I had a super accurate 30-378 built on a Hall single shot action, 34 in Pac-Nor barrel. I loved the accuracy and velocity it produced, but the brass was so soft I could only get 5-7 loads out of it.

300 WSM- proven super accurate / 300 Norma / 300 Norma improved- kinda the flavor of the day and also proven super accurate.

I have both the Whidden dies and the Hornady dies for the 30 Sherman Magnum- so the Whidden Dies are available.... But, I will tell you that the Hornady dies are excellent!!

Good info, I thought only Hornady were available. Did you buy the Whiddens at the Sherman website store?

You have an action problem with the Norma though!

Could you explain it in more detail? What problems are you referring to?

You buy the from Sherman Wildcat website- Either Whidden or Hornady.

9.4 should work.
H-1000 will work, I mostly use N-565 or N-570... Retumbo, RL-33, RL-26, IMR 8133 all work well with all of the info out there. Do a search on this site for 30 Sherman Magnum, or go to Sherman Wildcats on the web.
Most of the data I have has shown 3050- more than 3100 depending on powder choice with RL-33 and N-570 leading in velocities.
Always remember..... "Fast is fine, but accuracy is FINAL"!!!!

And yes, I visited Sherman's site and saw the results. But the barrels published are all 28 ".
I agree, accuracy is the most important thing, but I am interested in ensuring a high speed floor that is not in the upper limit, so that it allows me to find a precision node below.

This is very hard to beat for your intended purpose and the rig you're running. It will be a single shot but that doesn't hurt you at all.

I went with a 30 nosler in a 26 in barreled hunting rig. I wanted a repeater with heavy vlds but ample horsepower. The 30 does it well. I'm running the 230s at 2900 and need to get back out there for a little fine tuning. I'm getting .5-.7s at 300 yards right now.

Hello boys.
I have the following project in mind, and I'd love to hear your thoughts/opinions, in order to make it happen:
Build custom Rifle to consistently hit approximately 1000-1400y, based on .30 cal, and heavy for the caliber bullets: 220-250gn, G1 .700+ BC.
It does not matter the final weight of the rifle (target use mainly), nor the budget, nor the barrel life, if I can shoot more than 1000 is enough.
I have the following components that I would like to take advantage of:
- Trued R700 LA action.
- Jewell trigger
- PTG one piece bolt, with M16 extractor, custom fited to the action. (. 550 "bolt face).
- Badger 20MOA steel pic rail.
- Mcmillan Adj. Game Warden. Action bedded perfectly. Has pillars installed. Supports up to 1.25 "OD barrels. I could buy a chassis, but to start I think it would be ok.
- BDL hinged floor plate. I could put a DBM if necessary.
- more than 1000 220gn ELDX bullets, but that is not conditioning, because I can use them in other rifles. I would like to see them fly at more than 3000ps.
- Several pounds of H1000, but that is not conditioning either.

The components that I should buy:
- Barrel. I thought of a Straight 1.25" OD, 1: 8 Twist, 32"+ long, or the one that arises from the debate ...
- and optical, but does not enter this discussion.

The great question:
Which .30 cartridge to use?
- 300win mag ?, I'm bored with this one, but I have Redding custom dies / shell holders and all the case prep tools, etc.
- 300 RUM?
- 30 Sherman magnum?
- 30 Nosler? (.534" case head)
- 300 Norma Magnum? (need new bolt, .590 ")
- Another 300 ?, I hear you ...

To much bolt thrust and not enough metal in the bolt nose for any margin of safety. The 30 Sherman does it all IMO and fits your action better, a 30 Nosler is also great.

It is as you say: many good advice received, including yours.
I do not doubt the virtues of your equipment, but I am looking for those speeds that I have mentioned, with more efficient cartridges than the 30-378 and with more barrel/brass life.

Of the improved versions, what interests me most and I appreciate, is that the geometry of the case, allows a longer brass life, the trimming job is almost eliminated, and that you can continue firing factory ammunition, which is why I really like both the 30 Sherman and the 300Norma improved.

300 wsm will not do the trick however the 300 win mag will with the right length barrel.. also the 308 norma.. theses two rounds are the max in efficiency.. to do more you have to burn a lot of powder for very very little increase in velocity. even the 300 Weatherby will do no better..

30 nosler is as good as any. but bang for the buck 300 wm will win every time. and will shoot as good as anything.. I know the 300 wm is not an ideal design- a freak of design but it works so very well.. I do not own a 300 wm. for long range i shoot a 6.5/06 in a 25" bbl. and a 140 ab at 3020.

300 Norma fits nice in the CZ magnum action for a LR hunting rifle.

The 700 action probably fits the RUM, 30 Nosler ( throated long), 300 PRC etc without a boltface diameter mod much better.
