They are the worst exposed turrets I've ever touched. Nothing positive about them. They are only slightly worse than the Athlon ares BTR. Not even close to the same league as the SHV or PSTs(either gen).
Sounds like you should just send the scope back and get what will work the best for your needs ?
I'm definitely looking forward to your review. My wife is in sales, and her merchandise is the best there ever was, same with my chainsaw dealer. Looking for honest reviews. Thanks for the life advice. I plan on selling it. I purchased the scope hoping it could replace my Sightron. I will be doing a full review on the scope as I am sure it will be mostly positive. The turrets are loud but just like loud cars it does not make it good. Of the higher end scopes I have had my hands on I would rank the turrets in best to worst as Swarovski X5i, March 2.5-25x52, Sightron SIII, Nightforce NXS,Vortex Razor GEN II, Nightforce SHV exposed turrets, Gen I PST/HST, Gen II PST, Athlon Ares BTR, Black Nikon. I left out some that are not really hunting scopes. I am sure all "high speed" turrets are going to feel softer do to physics but some are far superior to others.

Not life advice, I just wouldn't want you to have a Nikon scope that doesn't meet your expectation's, that's all, nothing else. If you change your mind let me know. If there's anything I can help you with drop me a note, while I do not work directly for Nikon I know a lot of folks' who do.
I agree, I read on another forum, turrets are the best under 2k. Let's call it what it is, and stop with the BS. It's a 800$ optic, it's not a 800$ optic that's worth 1500$, a lot companies say that crap. I've been around a long time, and price point always reflects the scope. I really like the company that claims HD glass for 800$ and it's not even close to HD glass.I did not mention the soft turrets to rag on Nikon. I mention it because for many $800 is a lot for a scope and most do not have the opportunity to play with as many as I do so they need to get it right the first time. At this time the turrets are the only thing I can really comment on. I will need to test the rest of the scope before comment. To those in the boat I just described and who care about good turrets there are better options.
I got the chance to look through and sight one in this past weekend. My shooting buddy put the 4-16 version on his X-bolt in .300WinMag. He mounted the scope but hadn't had a break in his taxidermy business long enough to run any rounds through it.
Turret adjustments on his scope were firm and precise, not mushy at all. I have owned one SHV and currently own a NXS and while the X-1000 is just as positive, it's not as "heavy" feeling or maybe I should say "as tight as" as the NF's. Maybe the internals of the Nikon aren't as substantial as the NF's. Not sure.
Glass was clear and bright and I had no problem seeing .30 caliber holes in the black paper I was using for my target back stop. Don't think that was much of a test though as the range was only 100yds.
The first three shot group (Hornady Whitetail 150gn ammo) after bore sighting was 2" high and 6 " left. 24 clicks right and the next three were straight up and again, 2" high. Pretty cut and dry and six shots aren't much of a test but I liked the scope. If it will stand up to this particular rifle then it's a tough one.
On a side note; this Browning X-bolt is the crappiest rifle I've shot in a while. The stock is sticky and it kicked like a mad mule! Dura Touch? More like Bugger Stick. I'm just dumbfounded over that sticky stock! Whatever. johnnyk.
rfurman24, we got it the first time, you don't like the turrets. I wasn't saying the Nikon was EQUAL to the Nightforce. Don't accuse me of making BS claims. How do you know what I felt when I adjusted the scope? You don't. It's subjective. State your opinion based on your experience and move on. Yes I can compare the Nikon turrets to the NF turrets. Do you know what compare means? com·pare: estimate, measure, or note the similarity or dissimilarity between, but you knew that already, cause you know everything else, right? Hardly. Have a good day.Dude I have put thousands upon thousands of rounds down range with many different scopes and there is no way in hell you can compare the turrets on the Nikon to those on a Nightforce. They ARE NOT as positive. PERIOD. If you like the scope that is great. If it works for you great. I am sure it will track just as it should but do NOT be making bs claims. The Sightron SIIIs and the Gen I PSTs are the only sub 1000 scope with clicks in the ball park as the more expensive scopes. I have zero doubt as I have stated countless times that the Nikon black will be an overall great scope but the turrets are not great. This the same boat the ARES BTR is in. Great scope crappy turrets.
