New Mexico Mule Deer Unit 32

Heading east on Nov. 2 to meet up with my New Mexico friends in Texas for a few days of white tail and pig hunting out near Coleman, TX then back to NM for a few days of scouting before the season opens for me on Nov 9. Pretty sure most of my pre-planned access routes are washed out and my plan of "walking the arroyos" is a no-go. Lots of time glassing in my future...
Unfortunately, I believe you are correct. The good part is the animals will most likely be foraging around more due to the damage. Good glass is your friend!!!!!!

Yes this rain around Roswell is going to effect our plans as well. We are going to have to be flexible in our plans.

Headed to Roswell from ABQ this morning. Lots of snow in the high ground. I'm getting reports from locals that the unit is a mess. More rain and making the southern section worse. Gonna fight the weather and hope for a long enough break to do a late afternoon scout and get out all day tomorrow. I'll let y'all know what I find.

stay north and east of Roswell. Find some county road through the large tracts of BLM and get up high. Glass, glass, glass. We found deer along the Pecos.

How's your hunt going so far?

Hey! Been a challenge. +/- 270 miles in the unit scouting on Friday. Lots of flood damage to the roads but the county has done a great job of making things mostly passable. Found one group of deer with a shoot-able buck in the southern section near the Mossman Rd / Twin Buttes junction. Worked that opening morning with no joy.
Got a few tips from locals and tried the Hernandez Draw up in the northeastern area but creek crossings were a very muddy problem. Scouted up to Cocklebur Lakes on the West side of the Salt Creek Wilderness. Plenty of hunters. Lots of glassing needed up there. Scouted / glassed west of the Pecos River. The good high ground / glassing spots had local hunters on them.
Back into the southern section of the unit today. Found a couple of small groups of does so at least that's something. Lots of hunters on the roads. Flood damage is impressive and nearly every creek crossing is an adventure. Pretty sure you'll need to get away from the roads and hunt the drainage bottoms. The farther in and away from the main roads the better off you'll be. The does today were on the sunny slopes early after sun up but not far from cover.
Not really an "X" on the map. Sorry. Been a bunch of miles and lots of glassing. Hoping for better luck tomorrow and a narrowing down of where I'll be walking.
