Working up a new load for my 270 WSM using 125 gr. Cutting Edge bullets. Tried IMR 4451 powder. It gave me good velocity numbers, but ES was all over the place. I'm wanting to try a slower burning powder as I think it will help bvurn rate in the large case capacity of this round. Can someone with Quickload provide me with a max weight data for either H1000 or Retumbo (preferably both)?

With the H1000, you will end up filling the case and going into compression at roughly 73 grains plus or minus your seating habits.

If you start your ladder at 69 grains, you will be under 62ksi about the point where you get to 73 grains. This experience came from the time period when CA forced their lead hunting bans and my friends needed to learn to run the 130 Barnes TSX. Your 125 CEB will be in that same ballpark within the variations in brass and barrels.

The GRT code has a 270 WSM but doesn't have CEB bullets. I'm away from home without QL due to those fires. If nobody else comes along before I can run QL I will eventually get home.

The Retumbo won't play well with that 125 grain bullet. Save that for the heavy ones like the 140 to 160 grain range. YMMV

I know. I used their data for 130 gr. bullets using IMR 4451. I got an ES of over 100 fps with that powder over a ten shot string. I'm very particular with my reloading, so I believe it was the powder. Slower powders tend to burn more evenly in larger cases in my experince. Take a look at Hodgdon data for the 243 Win using Retumbo with 105 gr. bullets. An unlikely powder, but it most certainly works.

There is no CEB 125 in the GRT database so i used the Barnes 130 tsx.
Take note of the case fill and pressures. It would be more accurate if I had more detailed information on the case and rifle.

QL database does not include a 125 grain bullet for Cutting Edge. Attached data was run using the 120 grain MTH. I ran both powders to just below max pressure and both indicate a significantly compressed load. One solution would be to drop the charge weights to 100% load density, but that will drop velocity below 2900 fps which I would suspect is an unsatisfactory outcome.

I've shot a ton of monos over the last five years and if I learned one thing in that time it would be that a faster burning powder is indicated when you run of out of case capacity before achieving max pressure or desired velocity. RL-16 or RL-17 would be high on my list as both are capable of reaching max pressure with load densities low to mid 90% range.

Thanks for the info. I don't have any RL16/17, nor have I seen any for sale in quite some time. I will take a look at their burn rates and choose another powder close to them. Thanks again.
