Need help identifying these cartridges.

Looking to identify these cartridges.
i think the 2nd one is a 6mm ppc, i think the 4th one is a 300 h&h, 5th a 300 wetherby, and the 6th one a 458 win?

#3 is close to 7x57 Mauser but it almost looks to have the radius shoulders of a Weatherby. To my knowledge Weatherby had no cartridges without a belt.

I like the looks of #7. It is close to a 458AR. I'd like a gun in that baby. The 458AR is 2.55 inches long, 0.3 shorter than 300 H&H and has same 0.532 rim. The cartridge in your picture looks not quite that short. http://ammoguide.com/?catid=605

#8 may be the 505 Gibbs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.505_Gibbs

third is a 6.5x55 it will have a sharper shoulder angle after it is fire formed. it the 300 h&h and the 30-378 were the only ones i am sure of.

I saw the contest as well - but decided not to enter. However, my first thought was to use my caliper on the cases in the photograph - starting with the ones I was sure of. Not that your measurement would indicate correct size, but rather help establish size/length relative to the other cases.

I could then determined the approx. caliber of each by measuring the mouth. Once I had the caliber, then the length of the case, the shape and shoulder, plus other marks (double radius shoulder is telltale Weatherby) and rims (belted, rebated, etc) should narrow it down considerably.

My guess without looking at any of the other posts is.
1/ 221 fireball
2/ 22 PPC
3/ 250 3000 savage.
4/ 300 Holland & Holland.
5/ 300 Weatherby Magnum.
6/ 450 Nitro Express
7/ 500 A square
8/ 577 A square

Here it is. 221 fireball, 6mm BRX, 6.5x50 Arisaka/ 6.5 Japanese, 300 H&H Magnum, 30-378 Weatherby Magnum, 9.3x74R (notice there is a very slight neck in the original picture posted, disguised by the annealing), 450 Dakota, 505 Gibbs.

Man that 6mm BRX has a long neck. And the 505 Gibbs has a huge hole in the top!! They say the 458 Lott kicks like a mule and it's smaller than the 450 Dakota. Believe I'd need a brake on that Gibbs.

Thats sweet, what website did you get that from?

The parent cartridge of the BRX is the BR, the BR is 1.075 base to shoulder, is the 6mm PPC the 221 is 1.070 base to shoulder, this removes the BR and PPC from the list of possibles as the one pictured is obviously longer base to shoulder. The BRX will naturally have a shorter neck than a BR because it is .10" longer to the shoulder than its parent. Fire form it and you will have a shorter neck for obvious reasons. The other possibility was a dasher but with a 40 degree neck that throws it out. And therefore it is a 6mm BRX, no other well known options.

By the way the picture I posted came from Ammoguide.com. They have a cartridge visual comparison tool. and most known cartridges in their database.
