For the class of cartridge you are discussing, my advice is to save yourself a lot of time, trouble, and expense by going with the .264 Win Mag. It is as simple as it gets for a high-performance 6.5 cartridge. Go with an 8 twist barrel, no shorter than 26", 140 Berger HVLD's, and Retumbo. Have the barrel Melonite treated to extend its life, if that is a concern for you.
I have rifles in 6.5x55, 6.5-284, and .264 Win Mag. The .264 was, by far, the easiest path to a fast, accurate 6.5 as a pure hunting cartridge.
