Here's my 2 cents
First long range rifle without breaking the bank?
6.5 creed (or 260) of your choosing with a athlon or vortex scope (midas or viper hs-t perhaps?)
Load it up with 130's, perhaps berger vld hunting? And you'll be able to take medium size game and even elk out to perhaps 500? Here in sweden the 6.5x55 is used for moose all the time.
If you feel like something more powerful in the future go with the 7mmRM or the 300WM
A buddy of mine runs his 190vld from a 300wm at the same speed as i run my 130's from my 6.5x55, and with almost identical BC, the 300wm is a hammer compared to my 6.5, but the moose drop just fine from both of them.
Most important thing is to shoot, and shoot a lot, for that you cant beat the versatility of the 6.5
