The 338 federal pushes the same weight bullets faster and they carry more energy according to some sources but being 51 years newer its on paper rated for 10,000 CUP higher pressure... I don't think that figure holds true for reloading and working up until you see pressure signs. The 358 should also perform better out of shorter barrels due to the larger bore.

Not arguing that point, just making sure that the 358 winchester gets the love it deserves. The 338 federal is a great cartridge and I'm not trying to take anything away from it, but if you are gonna neck up a 308 why stop there

Or so I thought, was delighted when my wife and daughter wanted to go to the range with me. 8 pistols later I'm so busy reloading its hard to find time to shoot.

The .33's have better bullet selection, but yes, the .358 is a fantastic cartridge. As I said, I love the .308 and all its kids. I despise with a strong passion, the .30-06 (Turdy Ot Sux) and its children.

I would love to have a .358 in a Ruger compact. I think the .358 would perform admirably with the 16.5" barrel. That would be a fantastic hiking gun.


By the way, my wife finally shot her 6.5 Creedmoor. She was nervous, but once it fired, and she realized it had no recoil to speak of, she was delighted! Now she is on to me about getting her scope set lol

I've always been a fan of the 308 and while I don't despise the 06, it always rubbed me the wrong way when people (especially rednecks) would talk smack on it cause their 06 was a "man's gun" and had 50-100 fps more.

That's my reason too. I had an uncle that preached constantly about what the -06 would do. I was always expecting him to tell the military to give up the artillery guns, and replace them with a .30-06 so they could shoot down planes and ground targets from 10 miles away. Ok, I'm exaggerating a little, but you get the idea behind my hate for it.

She will do just fine with that rifle OK338...

If you folks reload ammo you'll be styling since you can try a swack of different bullets,,, 120 TSX's triple shock and the 100 gr Nosler PT's... Don't count out the 130's and 140's...

She might want to get the stock fitted to her with a soft gel shoulder pad,,, a gel cheek pad/ ammo-over pouch so her eye alines with the optic... I made my own... I shoot Left Hand,,, so the gel pad is on the other side of the stock... Ha

Sport Check had some gel Elbow pads for $20,,, then I got an adjustable ammo pouch to cinch up tight to hold it in place...

It works great for fast draw hunting and shooting sports since I can bump the stock tight to my face to get the shots off...

Lots of fast draw and dry firing this year,,, the cheek pad is a real bouns...
I might knock a 1/2" off my stock for a better fit as well...

Yuppers,,, a nice fitting rifle sure adds to the good times,,, do some planing before changing anything,,, most of us learned this over the years

Dont be a hater, appreciate a round for what it is......or isnt. LOL I for one never had much time for the 308 or 06 even though Im a big 243 708 and 25 06 fan. Had 3 308s that wouldnt hunt but have a Tikka altra lite in 30 06 that is a get r done gun.
The creed has a lot going for it, hope she burns the barrel out ;-)
