Muzzle brake question

I've had the best results with the tank style brake .. The
JP recoil eliminator. It definitely is the best brake to stay on target. Even with hot loads in my 28 nosler I'm right on target
and recoil is very tame.

Far warning the muzzle blast and noise from these are absolutely brutal. Excellent recoil reduction though.

I always wear hearing protection. The blast isn't bad for the shooter so not a factor for hunting. At the range it is pretty bad for those on the benches next to me.
Very effective brake. But it is ugly. Lol

I went a different way with the brake on my RUM. It is Shrewd varmint brake from Brownels. This thing is about 1" od and is a radical brake with no holes on top and bottom. It comes in .22 caliber and you have to time and bore it. Recoil reduction is only so so. Reduces the 300 RUM to about the same as a 7WSM with 140 gr bullets. The cool part is the holes are all angled slightly forward. the shooter feels no blast and it doesn't seem as loud as an unbaked RUM. Great to hunt with. Bystanders say it is hideous though.

I tried the Shrewd on three rifles. Won't be going back. There are much better brakes on the market particularly for controlling muzzle flip.

Like I said it's only soso as a brake. But it does help with blast. It is enough recoil reduction to for me to be able to shoot it well. Spotting shots is about like an unbaked 7 mag. Not the best in recoil or spotting but it does have it's good points. Just a diff different direction. I hate blast more than I hate recoil and like it.

I do too which is part of why I like the NWP from Chuck's so much. It also gives very good recoil and good muzzle flip reduction.

If I shoot a tank brake out of a box stand it will wilt both me and the deer, even with muffs.
I wouldn't shoot any rifle other than maybe a .22 braked or not from a box blind without making dead sure the muzzle is well outside.

Those with the ports angled sharply to the rear though will still pretty well blow you out of the blind unless you're shooting through a very small hole.

Dust.
Lol
You have to stick the muzzle out the window.
So that's the problem, that's why I like this site, you guys have all the answers. Reality is 12" x 4" slit. Rifle on bags and end of forend about even with hole. Trust me, you do not want to shoot a tank brake out of this thing. If wild rose has a better way under these conditions, I'm all ears. Never too old to learn something new.

Range building open window and someones newly acquired Soviet PTRS in 14.5x114 Soviet near 1000 gr bullet at 3300 fps and a brake that belonged on either a tank or aa gun....1 and only 1 round was fired with the muzzle inside the now empty window frame....

A RUM is plenty bad enough. I remember when only the military had brakes. We all shot big guns and we never knew the difference. Then magnaport started porting guns and it was on.
