Muzzle brake on a 300 Win Mag?

I love the brake on my 300win target rifle. But the brake on my 300win hunting rifle gave me 4 months of Tinitus after I dropped a whitetail with it some years back. The brake on that has since been removed.

I had a muzzle brake on my first .300 WM, a Savage 110 with factory porting, I bought in '95. When shooting at a range one day, I noticed everyone else had stopped shooting, and they were all looking at me wondering what sort of cannon I was firing. The blast from that thing would blow light weight objects off neighboring shooting tables. I had bought that gun new because it was a great price, and I'd always wanted a .300 WM, not because of the porting. I used to have to wear ear plugs and muffs together to get full relief from the noise of that thing. I realized if I ever shot it even once in a hunting situation, without ear protection, it would probably do ear damage, if only for a day or two (which probably means long-term cumulative ear damage too). I was so relieved a couple of years later when I found a gun shop that gave me an even swap for a new Savage 111 with no porting/break. I'd much rather have the recoil of a .458 Lott than those loud blasts! My 111 .300 prints clover leaves with cheap, Federal Power Shok 180 gr. loads. I'll never get another gun with a brake/porting.

I grew up shooting 12 gauge slugs for deer from the time I was 12, from an 870 with no recoil pad. I had thought that kind of recoil was just the way guns were. I remember the first time shooting a friend's .30-'06 when I was a teen. He said, "Watch out. It kicks real hard." I just laughed with much relief after I shot it.

I have a Magna-Brake on my 7mm Ultra Mag and I love it. It really tames the recoil and lets you settle in and shoot it more accurately.

I just put a brake from Elk Meadow Performance on my pre threaded Milspec Rem 700. Steve supplied it turned to the diameter of my barrel with peel washers to index it. Quick, easy, and it now has the recoil of my 308.

No need for brake I shoot 220 gr smk at 2800 out of a sendaro. The recoil is not bad at all and I only weigh 140 wet. My 300 yd groops average .735

I agree, no "need" for one. Shot mine for years without one it weighs 8 lbs. all up. Shot great groups as well. Just had a Holland Brake put on this week and it's a lot more fun to shoot now. Won't say it made my groups better because it didn't. But, I can easily spot my hits now and just enjoy shooting it more now.

That is freakin' awesome!!! I am happy with MOA groups at 300 with my hunting rifle. I really like the brake on it also. Noisy but sure tames a light rifle.

I've been been shooting my Rem 700 5R now for about 200 rounds with an Elk Meadow Performance Titanium brake. I believe this is shown earlier in this thread. I'll have to say it's a great design. No POI change with or without, same accuracy, and most interestingly, I can see feel very little difference in blast with or without the brake out of the 24" barrel. Maybe im just getting conditioned but I have not exerienced this with my other braked rifles. I had been shooting this rifle without the brake and it's now nice to be able to see impacts. The only difference I have seen is that there could be an effect in sound signature as I have to move my Superchrono Accoustic Chronograph a few yards further out to get good readings. No effect on my Ohler 35 though.

One year while hunting by myself, I missed the buck of a lifetime. I could not tell where my shot went because of the rifle kick. I put on a muzzle brake because of this and I'm happy I did!

I use both muzzle brake (Hdp) and sometimes a silencer (Stocker 250) on my 300 WM while hunting in Norway or Sweden. They a working fantastically, feels like shooting an airgun! I can strongly recommend it.
