Measuring target distance with GPS

I guess a 50 BMG is a cannon.
Yes it is Jim.
But like a cannon its alot to handle, and that can be an issue as for shooting them with any degree of accuracy.
I know a few guys who hunt the same area as i do who spent big bucks having Mark King build them 50s on large Bat actions. One guy is a regular Williamsport shooter and former world group record holder. But you know what, they cant handle those 50s and they are not shy about saying so.
Those 2000 yard deer are just pipe dreams, even on the rare days conditions would allow finding one.

Hey Jim hope all is well with you and your family. Jill says HI.
I see that you are going for 4K and hopefully shooting shorter distances to get dialed in.
Jill and I have been cheering you on in the sidelines. Really interested on how you are handling the Big Boy especially with your recent shoulder injury.
What groups are you getting with your .50 @ 1K now and what loads you using? Bet it's a hoot to shoot!
There will be a huge difference going another 3K with Temp, Humidity, spin drift and especially wind.
Hope that you get the distance down. If it was me I would use my Leica Geovid and shoot two points (leap frog) to get an accurate reading.
Good luck and God Bless

The "recent shoulder injury" did put a real crimp in my shooting. The original plan was to start shooting on the range in West Texas at Telingua in early December, but that has all slipped till now and we are going out there in a couple of weeks to set up the range. But my shoulder has healed almost as good as new. Should be totally healed by mid March. I also have a 5 mile range available to me in CO now but the guy is older than me....believe that or not...... so I better get going on that one before he dies.....LOL
Tell Jil, "Hi", and give that colossal dog a pat for me.

Samson puts a PAW up for you! He is getting more should I say doing what he wants. At 145lbs he just does what he wants and can't argue with him. He wins!
Glad to hear that your shoulder has healed. Keep us updated on the big 50!
Take Care & God Bless

I am setting up a range for up to 4,000 yards. I want to use a simple GPS for measurements. Not sure which ones will work. BUT....I DON'T NEED MAPS!! All I need is the ability to mark both ends of the path and have it calculate the distance. Assuming level ground. Even without the calculator I could use pencil and paper to calculate it if the unit would give me the GPS positions. It seems that most small handheld units are geared to using maps and land marks, not just raw GPS.

But there may be some out of the box solutions as well.
1) is there a program for tracking that will use my phone to find a tagged object and give me the distance to that object?
2) Since my phone does have GPS information that is accessible to the police, how can I access that information?
3) maybe time the bullet from firing line to target? That would be hard without very accurate instruments.
Any other ways other than a 3 mile tape measure?
https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gccalc.shtml and or a dozen others, hth.

Yeah, I know about those but I was looking for the instrument. But I have since solved the problem.
Jim you do that you can go to Harbor Freight and purchase a 4,000 ft roll of poly rope and just put a stake in the ground at one end and then string the rope out!
Samson would be willing to put a harness on with the spool of rope and walk it out. Just have to tie a steak on a pole, tie it to his back, and put it in just in a few inches of his reach in front of him.
Hope you are feeling good!

Did you know that there was actually an internal combustion engine that used gunpowder for fuel in the early days of autos. It didnt work very well because of residue.....LOL
