McGowen or Hart Rebarrel

I wouldnt even waste my time on a custom barrel that looked like that, the smith at minimum shouldn't have even chambered it.

I've had quite a few barrels over the years from Hart, Schneider, Bartlien. Krieger, Rock, Douglas, Proof and a few more I'm sure. Don't own a bore scope and never checked. They've all shot. Not sure I wanna start checking now. 😂I do have a McGowen coming. Got me thinking Maybe I should hurry up and invest in that bore scope. Haha

I wouldn't do any work on a barrel without first scoping it out.
If you have a firearm it is good to have a scope to check for copper/carbon buildup and throat erosion.

I was shocked upon viewing the McGowen photo !!!! I have many McGowen barrels & no problems - outstanding accuracy! The owner of the McGowen barrel with the photo needs to address his angst with McGowen. My McGowen barrels sparkle with perfection - no horrible tool marks.

Please allow me to respectfully submit a suggestion - go with a .280 AI, same bolt face, same magazine. Enlargement of bolt face & extractor modification would not be needed. The belted magnums in Ruger MKII's use a wider magazine box & ammo feeding from box is controlled by the top of the magazine. A new replacement magnum magazine box & follower would be required. Ballistics of both .280AI & 7 Rem Mag are real close. .280 AI brass is available. .280 AI brass may be made from .270Win with fire forming - some fussing but makes brass available.

Should I get my own bore scope?

I'm not saying a barrel with tool marks won't shoot its the copper fouling thats the problem. I dont buy a custom barrel to have to clean it like a factory barrel.

I agree with that. I guess my question arises in regards to the cost savings and what's sacrificed with that savings. If McGowens, Criterion's cost the same as a Bartliens, kreigers, Harts etc, folks would probably just buy the Bartlien and Krieger. Should you hold a barrel that costs 1/2 the price be to the same standards?

Mcgowen is in thecsame town i live, ive never owned one and never will.
Few years ago I guy rented a reamer from me that was having Mcgowen do a barrel for him I told him I would just drop the reamer off, after days of leaving messages telling them I wanted to drop the reamer off and were they were located so I could I finally Google the address and it was wrong. Finally somebody answered the phone I told the guy I Google the address but it was wrong his response " " not my fault" WTH so I told him suppose all the messages I left wasn't his fault either, went downhill from there. Such an ARROGANT *** I will never go back.

Last time I looked McGowan was even close to half the costs of others

Yeah, that would do it for sure…

I know what I paid for mine. If it cost near what a Bartlien did I'd have bought the Bartlien 10 out of 10 times, but for my purpose. I was ok with the cheaper barre this go round.

But, now that you've mentioned it. I have gotten the same Impression of them in regards to their attitudes / CS though out email chatter. Good to Know it wasn't just me.
