Mag fed lever gun

I have never heard of a Savage 99 in 338 Federal, but they did catalog 284 Winchester late in production run. I have never seen one in person. I have two 99's win fixed rotary mags. One is in 300 Savage which runs close to the 308 Winchester. The other is a 30-30 takedown model. Both wear iron sights and shoot very well. Maybe I will find a nice 243 or 308 with removeable magazine some day...
.338 Federal was not around until 2006. Product of Federal and Sako. So that was not a factory built Savage 99.

Old Browning BLR is my answer to this question mostly because you can carry a back up magazine in your pocket and put in a ziplock bag inside a zipper bag

I have a 270win in a blr that holds 4 rounds iirc. Short mag blr's hold either 2 or 3 rounds? Not counting 1 in the pipe.
Browning BLR would be my pick also. I had one in 243 and consistently got 1" groups at 100 yards with factory ammo. This was the lightning model and as I write this I think I probably made a mistake selling it.

You are correct, never issued as a 338 Fed. They did have 308, 243, from about 1956, then the more rare 284, and 7-08. They even chambered it in 358, 375 Win and quite a few other uncommon cartridges. The Savage 99 was hugely popular here in Canada, most common chamberings are 303 Sav. 30-30 and 300 Savage. There are still a ton of them around in good shape for 6-900 bucks.

You are correct, I mixed up 358 and 338, apologies.
By far the most common Savage 99s are in 300 Savage, which Hornady makes a 150 grain load for. The .300 Savage was built to be a 30-06 "short" - that is, to match the ballistics of the WW1 30-06 round. The .308 is almost identical but has a longer neck, to be better suited to military use.

I have loaded up a number of 300 Sav. 125 grainers for deer blind and hog hunting. They do the job really well. In the pic is my 20 inch carbine with no-name synthetic stock, in 300 Sav., and an 18 inch 760 pump (which you can get a 10 round mag for) in .270. I was comparing lever to pump actions; I concluded I was smoother with a lever than with a pump for second shots.

I have a Savage 99 in .308 myself. In fact, I am working on a load for this fall using Norma 170 grain. I enjoy it and my Browning BLR that is a .243 for deer hunting at ranges under 300 yards. That .338 Federal sounded interesting.

Rebarelling one to 338 Federal would be a fairly simple task. Would make a great elk, bear and moose gun. The 358 and 375 Win were very popular for heavier game.

Does anyone know of a lever gun that has a detachable magazine let's say 10 rounds. I am Looking into shooting 300 plus yards and want a good rifle round like 308 or better. Currently have a winchester model 94 trapper in 3030 and a savage model 99a in 375 win
The Henry Long Ranger lever action has a .308 with a 4 round magazine. I doubt if there is any aftermarket mags that are 10 round as the original mag is flush and located at the balance point where you would carry it for hunting. Very nice rifles and appear to have many of the atributes of the Browning BLR. I have one in .243. Great looking and good shooting. If you think you would need more that four shots, having a spare mag is a quick changeout.
