Looking for a good gunsmith to re-barrel a Model 70 from 6.5cm to a smaller Varmint cartridge (same bolt face size). Lets here what cartridge and who (gunsmith) you like in West Texas. Dont really want to mail it unless I have to.

WTO out of Ackerly. 22 Creed gets my vote and you could just neck down your existing brass.
I called them and he sent me a quote of about $1250. (for a 6mm CM) One of the things I didn't like or understand was a 75 dollar charge for "QC and proof firing" I figure if you just worked on it for 2-3 days you been checking your work all the time you were going. Why would you charge a guy 75 bucks to look at it after your finished and walk out back and shoot 1 round through it? Am I missing something?

If you don't get a good lead in W. Texas, consider contacting Charley Robertson @ Score High Gunsmithing in ABQ, NM. I realize you don't want to mail it somewhere, but you do want it done right. Charley will do it right.

My gunsmith here is doing for me at this time exactly what you are talking about. Mine is a savage 10 predator and he is charging me $100 to spin it on. Barrel cost $310 from Nortland Shooting Supply. $150 for fluting that I wanted. About $50 for the barrel lug and nut. Between $600-$700 total. And I hope to have it tomorrow.

Twisted Precision out of Center Point Texas does very good work as well. I'm not sure how the price would compare to WTO but it's worth giving John a call.

Not nearly enough info there. Push feed or CRF? Square the face of the front receiver ring and square the bolt face? Finish on the barrel exterior, 320g sanded or bead blast or something else? Barrel contour the same as what you have now, or will there be work involved to fit a larger contour?

I'd have to look at your whole quote and balance to market trends.

You might ask him your question? Seriously, my guess is it is pulled from another line item, just to show he does some QC work.

Wow $1,250! Are you talking about just spinning on a new barrel or additional work like truing the action, fluting, etc. etc.? Assuming you're just wanting a common steel barrel cut and chambered I don't see how you can get to $1k for that.

Benchmark barrels will do the work. There turn around time is really good and there barrels are really good. 10 years ago they redone my first rebarrel on an old ruger m77. 7mm. And it still shoot 1/2 Moa. After 800 firings. It's to the point the only time I shoot it now is during deer season.
since you are located in west Texas your turn around time shouldn't be that long

give them a call. They are good to work with.
as far as calibers. 6mm or such
