Looking at Smokeless options

A little update on my CVA 45-70 Scout smokeless conversion. It never shot that well, just occasional glimpses of mediocrity. Multiple bullets, but always imr4198. Thought it was my Leupold scope, so swapped it out for my tried and true Vortex Crossfire 3-9 last year, and seemed a little better. Sent the scope in to be tested, came back as OK.
Figured the ~1.5-2""@100 was as good as it was going to get, so just before the season started this year, I took it to the range to double check it and get it dirty. It was flinging shots inches apart. I decided to try it without the factory brake. Point of impact from last shot with the brake to first shot without was about 6" left, dead center of the target. Put the next 2 shots to just under an inch(group was 4" low). Dialed up 4 minutes and it tracked perfectly.
So, if anyone has a CVA conversion that isn't shooting, try it without the brake.
Mine did the same thing. Took it the GS who did the conversion and said it had to be shot with a veggie wad. So, we loaded it up with 56 grains of IMR 4198 and it shot ragged holes at 100 yds. He stated that they need the veggie wad when shooting bullet to bore projectiles. Happy now.

This was at 200 yards.

Yep….what @Rick Richard said. Wads (either veggie or wool) are the ticket in the conversions. Mine shot well OVER moa without them. Mine actually preferred a .060 wool wad over veggie. The following picture was at 200 yards with my conversion. Two shots on the target and 1 on the steel next to it. I called the load "good enough"….😉

if you want a lite smokless the woodman patriot is probaly the lightest custom smokless . i have marks gen 2 patriot with a brux barrel in .45 and i'm about to order his adjustable breech plug . he makes a gen 3 now and it is available in .50 smokless and i thin he has or is about to release a bolt action . i'm lazy and like the simplicity of using and cleaning a break action . give Mark Woodman a call , hes very easy to talk with and very generous with his time and knowledge .

We have three hankins conversions of the scout 2, and every one will shoot .5 moa with fury bullets and no wad. Maybe we got lucky but they are phenomenal shooters for the price. Would recommend to anyone wanting to get in on the smokeless game.

Mine sure wouldn't. I varied my bullet sizing (Fury Star Tip 'MZ') between as tight as I could and as loose as safety would allow and it just wasn't gonna happen without a .060"wool wad. I've heard of a few guys with your kind of success…..but not many.

My buddy has a CVA conversion, it shoots great out to 60y, we haven't had the chance to shoot at longer ranges, I dumped a doe with it 2 years ago. hopefully do some shooting this summer. He has been loading Pitman bullets over a wool wad.

I would put my savage action with Arrowhead system up against almost anything to 500 yards. Same hole at 100 and it is a beast. Have taken deer past 320 with no issue and watched them fall. In just the gun and conversion I have less than $2K. With scope, rings and base, right at $4K.

How is the recoil on a full build SML? I have a converted CVA and it is not bad, but I am using much less powder I believe as to what is used on a full build.

I have a large brake on the gun, but recoil is not bad to me. It is less than my 300 WM. Here is a picture of the gun as it sits.

In the picture of the gun from the stand, the deer was taken down past the creek just at the edge of the wire fence at the far tree line.

Rick, If you come east, you are welcome to load and shoot it.
