Long range hunting ???

Congratulations on a great shot. And a great trophy. That's got to be a great feeling to have all your hard work rewarded. I personally have fallen in love with long range shooting and hunting. Am always reading and on the lookout for better equipment and trying to improve my skills. There are hunters that don't think that long range is ethical. But a lot of these same hunters will shoot well beyond their means without the knowledge that we as long range shooters and hunters do our best to gather and understand. One thing I do believe that we need to do when taking any shot is follow up and do our best to ensure that we did hit or miss. Again congratulations on a great shot and the ability and confidence to make the shot.

It's a wonderful feeling when all the time and effort come together with success. And i agree about following up after the shot 100%

Wow that's amazing shooting congrats, I would like to hear more about the 165gr SGC bullet, pass through ? Recovered ?
I just bought some 6.5 130 gr for my 6.5-284 and 7mm 165gr for my 280AI to try
Pass through at 1311yrds. The buck i shot at 650 i recovered the bullet.

I know this is a long range hunting forum but in your opinion what distance is to far? I was antelope hunting this past week and was able to take a long shot at one and was successful. I spent a whole mess of time load developing and testing that load for the hunt. I would like to share the picture and distance but don't want to if it would look bad because of the distance. So please comment. I know the effective range is cartridge specific and i had more than enough gun for the shot.
Generally around here sub 400 is a chipshot, 400-600 is considered mid range.

Because of the ballistics we generally start LR at 600yds out to 1000yds, and Extra Long Range from 1000-on.

There are no hard and fast rules though but generally thatch the ballpark.

For me long range on animals is 300 yards. Thats all Im comfortable with at the moment. Ill bang away at 1000 yards all day shooting steel though. If you have the proper equipment, the right bullet with the proper energy required on target, and you can consistently make the shot, then go for it at whatever distance you want!!

Ethics and facts are separate things. A fact would be what is the max distance you are 100% sure you can connect the first time, every time. Thats a great topic for discussion. Ballistics and accuracy get discussed, but rarely to I see discussions of wind reading or the finer points of accuracy that come into play at longer ranges. Sorting bullets by ogive shape, sorting cases, primers, ext all start to really show up at 1k and beyond. The only real ethical discussion when it come to LR hunting is whether a hunter is willing to take shots at a distances farther than he is 100% confidant in. If a guy is willing to walk in shots and wound game before killing it, thats ethics and I dont want to talk about that. So lets talk about what it takes to hit a small target every time at 1300 yards, because it takes a lot! Mainly I want to know how to make cold bore wind calls at that range. What kind of vertical is your load holding at 1300 for 5 shots? How did those sierras sort? Been wanting to try them. The only time there is a ban on a discussion, I have a feeling someone wants to hide something.
