I've used a Leupold 2-7 ultralight scope on my rifles for years. No problem making shots out to 340 yards. At 400, I wished for a bit more power, but probably could make the shot. The 2 power works good for quick close up shots, which I often get on javelina.

Thrty years agoI had a truck break down right before a hunt. My wife wasn't happy that I tried took her Buick, and I wasn't happy because it wouldn't take me where I needed to go. After I retired, I solved that by buying a Jeep Liberty as my around town car. Extremely capable off road with a 1-'1/2" lift and BFG All Terrain Radials. I have a hunting trailer I can pull with it. I still like the truck better, but I have a backup plan. Truck hasn't broken down since.

I have two of those old 2-7 scopes. I should probably put that on my .30-06 with new rings and give it a go.

+1 for Leupold VX6 2 - 12 with Fire dot. I hunt timber as well and the firedot is awesome for low light as long as you are conscious of the setting brightness before you need it.
