Since all the good hp bullets are drying up and discontinued. Does anyone have any experience with the 25 gr. V-max?
Out of what rifle? I'd think they'd work just fine. CheersSince all the good hp bullets are drying up and discontinued. Does anyone have any experience with the 25 gr. V-max?
I have shot at least 400 of those through my 17's never had a problem with them.Out of what rifle? I'd think they'd work just fine. Cheers
Shot mostly prairie dogs Lots of Fur damage.How did they work terminally? Lots of fur damage?
Mainly out of the 17 Remington. I have a cz and an AR in 17 Remington. The AR is a 10 twist but I think it will stabilize them at my altitude.Out of what rifle? I'd think they'd work just fine. Cheers
I don't "really" think it's going to be a problem, I just think the old 25gr HP from Remington when you could buy them for reloading was the best and the discontinued 25gr HP from Hornady was in second place in that weight... so I'd say the Hornady 25gr V-max is hard third, heck maybe even better for some rifles. Good luck CheersMainly out of the 17 Remington. I have a cz and an AR in 17 Remington. The AR is a 10 twist but I think it will stabilize them at my altitude.
I also have a 17 fireball and a 17 AH.
When the 25 gr V-max came out everyone was worried about splashing
While this bullet is scarce it's still available , I was lucky enough to secure several hundred rounds of factory loaded HSM using this round, it is 100% effective within 204 capabilities, 400 yds.Powder valley, located in Kansas I believe.I love this topic! I wrote an article for LRH about 100 years ago entitled Fur Loads. (https://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/fur-loads.460/) In it I mentioned that you can draw some conclusions concerning terminal performance on fur by relative performance on other species. That said, after watching literally tens of thousands of varmints shot with every .17 caliber RF and CF cartridge out there (and a hand full of wildcats also), MOST tipped bullets will come apart easier than hollowpoints. You're walking a fine line between splashing and exiting. Stick with CF hollowpoints (preferably 25 or 30 grain) and you'll be golden at normal calling ranges. My Go-to is the .204 with 35 grain Bergers. (Also discontinued but I have several Lifetime supplies if you decided to go that route.) Oh, and a coyote with a full dose of adrenaline will be hard to put down regardless of cartridge and bullet! Good luck. Post photos of the blanket when you get it finished!
Pretty fair assessment, but wishful thinking for those who suffer from shooting insufficiencies.17hmr = 150yds
17wsm = 250yds
17 hornet = 300yds
That's my experience with prairie dogs.
20 practical if going farther
Usually bring two of the 17's on a trip and only use them when the range is limited. Cheaper shooting that way.Pretty fair assessment, but wishful thinking for those who suffer from shooting insufficiencies.
The hornet rules and I moved my other 17's on after realizing it's potential.
