largest case per caliber choice?

1. Suppressor
2. Modern cartridge selections
3. Improved understanding of internal and external ballistics, advanced barrel construction, modern bullet design and advanced shooting ability made (most people) realize length for speed is an unnecessary trade off for most hunting applications.

A 180 at 2800fps kills just as dead as a 180 at 3000 fps under the majority of hunting ranges.
I have a dozen adequate hunting cartridges to choose from. For everything in North America, with the exception of probably Moose, Elk or large bear....my 18" 6.5 PRC will kill it all.
An 18" 7 SAUM will kill it all. An 18" 300 WSM will kill it all.
I don't need my 24" 7 Rem mag with a 180 hybrid to go 3100 fps when I can get a light, compact 18" system to send a similar bullet at 2800 from a 7 SAUM with a suppressor. Both are gonna kill anything you shoot with them.

Gimme a suppressed shorty every time

Or, you could just get a 7x57 or 7-08 shooting 140's at 2900fps then your elk and moose is covered as well.

Big bears are potentially dangerous game so should always be respected as such when choosing the right combination of firearm, load and bullet.

Or I can shoot a 140 out of a suppressed 18" 7prc and get all the performance of a 7-08 and 1/4 the noise in a shorter pkg

Never on my rifles. Just have no interest, not even if free. "Me too" performance is never a rational justification and could never become a replacement. I believe the 7-08 will outlast the 7 PRC.

i don't do metrik as i'm a 26cal fan 🤫 🥴
Have I got a cartridge for you! Some time ago hornady and Thompson centre introduced a cartridge called the .30TC. Total flop, supposedly smaller case than a .308 with bigger performance than a .30-06, mostly hype and unicorn powder. Little shorter than a 308, I think 48mm case length, sharper shoulder, less taper, cool idea but never took off.

BUT….and hear me out…what do you think a .264-30TC might be capable of? Just might be the greatest thing since sliced bread…..

264wm has been my go-to since i was 11 ('76) and have bloomed since then. in '15 (or '14) i decided to get the 300wm since it's belted just like the 264 is for reference is familiar to me. i don't hunt (as i've stated many times in other post), but love the reloading game and learning thereof! having 3 30cals w/different capacities and range of uses (300bo, 308win & 300wm) is there any benefit to having the largest 30cals available (not counting wildcats and improved) like the 300nm, 300lm and 30-378wby (300rum, 300prc & 30nos maybe)? the only benefit i can think of is the largest cases can use a shorter barrel to get the job done of the smaller magnums to make the firearm more compact and lighter? the cost of the extra powder for more velocity at hindrance of lower barrel life (consumable) and its possible worth? for hunting use it might be as it's not being shot very much (say 20 shots per year?) can last a long time. SO, what large capacity cases do you have per caliber and your decision to have them?

side note, if i decide on the mk22 (308win, 300nm & 338nm package) the 300nm can do the same job as the 300wm @ 3" less barrel length.
7 Allen Mag here… Mostly for fun but also to test projos. And a rifle built by Kirby. I really do like the rifle and it's one of my easiest shooting, most accurate builds. Not a plinking rifle for sure, but I did do a neck shot on a squirrel at a couple hundred yards for an impromptu speed shooting bet. 😉

i was thinking about doing the 30tc over 308win as it does have some performance gain up to certain bullet weights.
