Gentlemen,

I have another newbie question for you. This time regarding Lapua brass.

I was going to order some brass from Brownells since it's on sale but they list it as 6.5x284 Winchester...

I looked at the Q&A and someone asked if its the same as Norma and they claim that it is different. Can someone verify whether or not this will work in my new Cooper 6.5x284? The manufacture part number is the same as others that list it as Norma.

For those experienced guys, should I just buy different brass or Lapua the way to go?

Thanks in advance.

6.5-284 win versus 6.5-284 Norma has more to do with how the throat is cut. There is Lapua brass and Norma brass (among others). They're both made to SAMMI specs but there will be minor differences such as case wall thickness and brass hardness. Those things also can change from lot to lot within the same manufacturer.

In other words, you are fine to get the Lapua brass. Be sure to resize it to a dimension that is close to your chamber dimensions. Either read a lot of available info on this site(there is more than enough to answer the question you asked) or call Redding or whoever you are going to get your dies from and have them explain it to you.

The Lapua brass labeled 6.5x284 Winchester is the same as 6.5x284 Norma according to Brownell. I recently ordered some from Brownell and the brass had the same head stamp, 6.5x284, and was in fact identical in all dimensions to an older lot I purchased about 7 years ago that was labeled 6.5x284Norma. No issues. I use both Lapua and Norma brass is my Cooper(and other 6.5x284 rifles) with excellent results. I had chambering issues with Hornady brass a few years ago and never tried it again.

I would note that Redding lists dyes for both the 6.5x284 Winchester and 6.5x284 Norma. I don't know about the 6.5x284 Winchester dyes, but use the 6.5x284 Norma, Redding S dyes/with expander in full length and neck dyes with a .292" bushing. I get superb results with the Redding dyes in terms of accuracy, ES, run out, and case life with both Lapua and Norma brass in all my 6.5x284's..
