Just acquired a new Rem UM. Second range session attached a 6"-9" Harris bipod. After one shot it was very loose. The front stud pulled out of the wood! Turns out it is a very short wood screw!

There is a channel cut in the stock for ramrod clearance. This leaves .360" of wood. Cannot believe they chose a wood screw rather than a machine screw stud with an anchor plate similar to this:

Here is a picture of the short wood screw. There is a washer on outside that makes it even shorter going into the stock.

I went though my junk and found an old Butler Creek machine screw stud with a small nut. It fit with enough clearance for ramrod but I think a plate would offer better support.

Glad I discovered it. Wouldn't have been happy if it pulled out while using a sling during a hunt! Hope this prevents any catastrophes with other Laminate owners.

I can attest it will strip out. I was shocked to see a wood screw. On day one of my backcountry Coues hunt last year in the borderlands, my sling fell off and I nearly dropped a loaded ML. Combine this with Remington's worthless two position safety that just cannot seem to stay in SAFE, and you have yourself an accidental discharge in the making.
I used my emergency super glue to reattach it but that failed too. I've since epoxied it and it's bomb proof. Really unhappy overall with my Rem UML

Az, had one pull out on a mule deer hunt a couple miles back in a drainage. Have epoxied all my screw type studs since. Lesson learned. Thanks for making shooters aware of this possibility.
