Just wondering how many know the difference between calibre and cartridge?

I have been guilty of confusion of the difference especially when I was very young. My dad only gave us a few 22 LRs at a time to make us better shots. When you came back from an outing, he expected one kill per shell. so we called them bullets. The first time I was actually handed a full box of 22 LRs I coined a Praise that we still joke and laugh about

50 Bullets !!!:D

I'm sure some of the old timers can relate.

I am 22 years younger JE and can fully relate to that. The sad thimg is I can not remember when I learned they were cartridges.
You said things on your previous post I wanted to say but was afraid I might get banned from this site.

In my opinion, There are three types of people that this thread highlights.

Those that know and use the proper terms (Most of the time).

Those that don't know all of the proper terms to use, But would like to be familiar with, and use them.

And those that don't care or give a dam what is correct and the importance of it.

Those that fit the first group have a responsibility (In my opinion) to at least explain the difference and the importance to group number two.

Those in group number two that are interested, should make a point of asking people in group number one "ANY" question about ANY subject so you can learn.

And to those in group number three that don't care and assume that they know everything or can find the answer on the internet, are missing out on lots of expertise and will not have a very bright future
in the shooting sports. Group number one and number two should distance them selves from this group so you don't get contaminated
with their way of thinking.

I am 77 years old and learn something new almost everyday because i keep an open mind and listen to everyone. I may cull someones comments, but i still read and listen to hopefully find that pearl of wisdom or idea.

To me that's the biggest value of this forum period. No matter how long you have been involved with the sport you can learn something every day by just spending a little time here going through topics.

We never stop learning except by choice or death.

I got this off the Rifle sporting and firearms journal and will leave it as-is to ponder ...

When I was growing up, they were shells to us. We had shotgun shells, 22 shells, and 30-06 shells.

My local gun range received a bad review online for not selling a gun to a walk in customer after it was evident to the sales representative that he knew nothing about guns and had absolutely no interest in educating himself. His review stated he went to a big chain sporting goods store and bought one.
Another scary event at a Cabela's, a woman was selecting a carry pistol. It seemed she wanted to buy a Kimber as it made a nice fashion accessory. The sales rep suggested some FMJ's for practice but she only bought twenty rounds of PD ammo. Again just buying a gun without any knowledge and no intention of learning or training.
I certainly am not advocating for more government control as our legislators are equally uneducated. But the recent buying frenzy has lots of guns in the hands of incompetent people which reflects badly on responsible gun owners like us.

I understand what you are saying. Someone taught us all how to handle firearms long before there were classes. (Us Old guys) Hopefully they have friends that are helping them. I am ok with idiots getting guns as long as I can too.

Maybe you and JEC should read some books on manners !!

Sorry,
I think you need some Long range hunting manners.
We like to joke and admit our short comings on this site and don't get adversarial if there opinion is not the same as ours , And besides, when we were kids we said lots of strange things.

The first thing I was taught about manners was that If you could not say anything good about someone, you didn't say anything.

Being the younger generation here (36)I have to agree 100% with the old timers. Manners dont mean you kiss everybody's backside or try to not offend people. Sometimes the truth offends but it's still the truth. Not sure when folks my age and younger started wearing skinny Jean's and man buns or belts with sparkly crap in them for you country boys, but pretty sure that's about the time "feelings" started becoming a little too important. Since when did men have feelings? Maybe the internet is to blame for all these men with feelings running around!
