Is the .308 Win 7.62 X 51 still a Long Range Hunting Cartridge?

In all my 55 years of hunting, I've never needed to shoot farther than about 425 yards on any game. All with a .308. Having said this, it can go farther. My personal limit is around 600 yards on it. Some game have "thicker" hide than others requiring a heavier caliber for drt reliability. And there are some game out there that may require much farther shots than I would be comfortable with using my .308. My trusty 300 wm can fit the bill for "longer" shots. Now, if we're talking dangerous game, I turn to my 375HH. My experiences hunting include African game and all over North America. But these are my thoughts. To each, their own.
7.62 x 51 is STILL a NATO Round!

I put up a Post before about the M-14. Would love to get my hands on a M-14 Match Rifle!!!!

I have a lead on a double lugged M1a. Dave Sullivan, Westwind Rifles, re-barreled with an Obermeyer provided by Boots.

It used to belong to me. It took Dave longer than I anticipated for him to finish. By the time I got it back I already acquired 3 more lugged guns. I never shot it, sold it to a friend. He took to Perry in the M1a match, he placed 12th. Forgot what year, most likely there were close to 500 shooters in that year.

If interested, send me txt.

Seller will provide more pics. Here's one.

Len,

The 14 can hang in a match. State High Power Championship. Not service rifle, means it is free for all. The 14 shot against a bunch of 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm, and 308 bolt guns. All irons, sling except in standing. 200, 300, and 600 across the course.

The lowly gas gun took the cheap wood. A former Palma shooter with his 308 bolt gun came in strong at 600 prone. He posted 198, the 14 posted 197. But, not enough to offsett the 4 point deficit from 2 and 3. The 14 won the championship by 3 points. The 308 bolt gun came in 2nd.

So about those man bun wearing 6.5 Creedmore folks that can't hit a 10 inch target over 90% of the time at the 1K KD one way Range while it's sitting still with their ballistic programs, blue tooth links, etc, and extra superb 6.5 performance, while not under fire. Yup, it's an easy day.🔱 Bet you can Google Battlefield exploits of folks that made such shots repeatatively with the Old School outdated 7.62 X 51? 🤔 Dang, those folks must have been some pretty good marksman??? 🤔🤔
And a lot poorer optics! Old school

Have I mentioned that at a thousand yards very few Military Precision Shooters could score better with bolt actions then they did with M14NM? Yet very few hunters consider a 13+ pound rifle for field use nowadays. 🤔 My aged spaghetti arms, bent broke back, and scarred Kuwait lungs prefer much lighter bang sticks afield. Don't believe that I'm in the minority anymore? Thankfully the CNO preferred Redfield and Bausch & Lomb .

I'll be 73 this year. Two brand new knees, one brand new shoulder, two brand new lenses, and severe Asthma. 223 bolt gun suits me very well

Still all original equipment, yet one of my wisdom teeth have finally been removed, without requiring replacement. But most of those OEM parts don't function at the same levels they did in the 50's. LOL 🤣 Guess I could really use those PF Flyers nowadays. LOL. Try https://tanksrifleshop.com/ for M25 - M14- M1A builds. JMHO.

Nez we love hearing stories from you and you giving us some of your knowledge!!
God Bless!

We can't turn this into a M14NM thread without including H2OMAN? Is he a resident? Or do y'all need to Google his M14 publications? 🤔 There are forums dedicated to the M14 and others dedicated to the Extreme Long Range H. O. G. Hunters that were issued them. But that is a different style of LRH. 🤔 Has anyone calculated how long Skippies shot was? LOL.
