IMO - Formed by years of dog hunting. When I was young i used a 22-250 and would just load up the heaviest bullets made. the 60 gr. would just make a tiny exit wound. Later on i moved up to 270 and the hard copper 14 hpbt's only make a .277 exit hole. It was the same thing with my 7mm STW the 168 match bullets just punch a .284 hole through them.
I have a buddy that swears by his 6mm rem. with 105 VLD bullets. Just a tiny hole through the dog.
You hit them a long ways out with bigger calibers and they don't run off. Nothing more fun than to be driving down a snowy road and see some dog out mousing in a field and whack it.
