Iowa hunters are now allowed to use necked rifle cartridges (with some caliber restrictions)

It is totally asinine that you can hunt deer with a BMG but not a 243! Better than shotgun only, and hopefully just temporary.

With this being a "Long Range..." forum I figured most of the members would know that a .50bmg shoots a .510" projectile, where as the law states that the projectile must fall between .350 -.500.
Further more, not too many people have .375 Cheytecs or .416 Barretts and if they did they'd probably have the money to drop on a nice Whelen or BM or SOCOM or Beowulf and would find it more cost effective to drive deer with that. They aren't allowing anything under .35 cal because they don't want a 140-180gr triple shock ending up in someone's hallway.

I think that here in GA you can use anything that is 22 centerfire and above. The problem is that there are idiots that have no idea about hunting or firearms making the laws in some states.

If you look on some of the Iowa hunting forums some of their hunters aren't happy with the expansion of rifle cartridges for deer hunting. They site safety concerns.

You are correct on that. It is all in the wording. The regulation .350 to .500 that is referring to diameter. Now if the said 35 caliber to 50 caliber it would be a different story. 50 Caliber can be bullets with a larger diameter .501, .505. .510,ect.
Thanks for clarifying that. But we are not all idiots looking at that law and mistaking a 50 Cal diameter. Do you think that the law makers know the difference between a .500 diameter and 50 Caliber?

A 250 grain triple shock is a lot less dangerous in someone's hallway.

You're right though, a 50 BMG is just on the other side of lawful with the new changes.
