If you were to build a .300WM for hunting…

If using a suppressor, the total rifle weight with the suppressor should be a good carry/shooting weight at 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 pounds …..maximum! memtb
Dang man, 6 1/2 pound 300wm all up and trail ready with supressor....do you have one of these?

No sir! I haven't "crunched" the recoil values, but with the Suppressor, which I understand helps reduce felt recoil a bit and a good recoil pad….... felt recoil from a 6 1/2 pound 300 WM shouldn't be unbearable. 20 + rounds from the bench may not be pleasant…..but this is a "carry" weight hunting rifle!

I've never researched suppressors, but approximately what is the % recoil reduction with a "quality" suppressor? With that knowledge, I'll attempt to to determine the ft/lbs recoil. memtb

My comment wasn't necessarily directed at recoil but more in how to build a complete, trail ready, magnum long action rifle with a supressor at 6 1/2 pounds. That's impressively light IMO.

As far as recoil, I wouldn't think that would be a very pleasant rifle to shoot haha.

Using a 215 Berger as a bullet, estimated 2900 mv due to a shorter barrel for the suppressor, 78.7 grains as the powder charge weight, I get 50.47 ft/lbs recoil not figuring in the 30% recoil reduction when using the can…..is 8 ft/lbs less recoil than my hunting rifle.

Deducting the 30% when using the can…..I get a recoil value of 35.5 ft/lbs recoil. If I did the 30% reduction math properly!

35.5 ft/lbs recoil……less recoil produced by my wife's hunting rifle! She uses neither can nor brake……clearly if she can do it most any man can, provided he doesn't have an injury in which he can't be subjected to much recoil! memtb

Right but how heavy is this rifle? Again, recoil reduction was secondary to my interest in a build list for a rifle this light.

Sorry to hijack OP. But I think a rifle of these specs deserves some attention haha

I did my math on a 6.5 pound rifle (total) scoped, loaded, and with sling. The numbers were with or without can.

I somewhat "guestimated" the velocity….as I really didn't know the finished barrel length for use with the can.

If with a longer barrel, and no can while keeping the weight @ 6.5 lbs…...the increased velocity (due to longer barrel) will increase the recoil some! memtb

I don't know how that weight can be arrived at…..likely very expensive. I was attempting to emphasize that a light rifle, doesn't necessarily mean recoil that is impossible to cope with!

In reality…. 7.5 to 8 pounds would be a more realistic weight. That extra weight would decrease the recoil a bit!

Everyone appears to be very recoil conscious….so I pulled a rifle weight from my rectum to provide the recoil values. An attempt to show that even at a potentially near impossible weight to achieve……the recoil is quite tolerable for a motivated shooter!

For a carry rifle…..reduced weight trumps a few less ft/lbs recoil! JMO memtb
