How close are RL17 and H4350?

I've got some lined up, anything particular you are interested in just let me know
Thanks. I watch all of them several times each. It would be interesting to see how you tweak your bullet seating depth once you find load that you like. Please don't use your CM as an example. Thanks and wish you the best in your new venture.
 
I bought two pounds of 17 at a local gunshop, price was right. The description was deceptive. "All weather conditions" verses temp insensitive. I bought a pound of 4350 two days ago for under 100 bucks.
Under a hundred bucks, LMAO! I experimented with 16 & 17 in 7RM, got very accurate loads with 168 Berger's. But tried switching to H1000 for higher velocity and temp stability. Of OP's powders in hand, I would think the h4381sc would be a good option. Got me where I wanted in 270, temp stable and medium slow burn, but great even with the lighter .277 130gr Barnes. 3010, single dig SD out of a browning auto.
 
I would say the largest difference you're going to see between them is load density which in tern will have more effect than overall burning rate because more RL17 can fit into the same size case than H4350.

In terms of density Highest to Lowest:
RL17
RL16
H4350

In the two cartridges I use these powders in, RL17 and RL16 consistently require more powder to hit max but also produce more velocity. In 9.3x62 RL17 is amazing for case fill and velocity, but you can't get enough RL16 or H4350 into the case to match velocity.
Here is a photo of 2, .22-.250 cases. The one on the left has 40.3 grains of RL16 - a dark gray powder, filled within 1mm of top. The case on the right contains 43.0 grains of H4350 - a gray/green powder, filled within 1mm of top. This sort of indicates that RL16 is less dense than H4350. I am assuming the moisture content of both powders are equal. I have found that RL16 consistantly gives higher velocities than H4350 when loaded to optimum pressures. RL16's lower density is some advantage in providing greater fill to certain larger capacity rounds - less air space. I get superior accuracy & higher velocity from my 6mmAI with 87 bullets probably because it has near optimum case fill & contains NG.

yeah under 100 bucks, what else can ya do ? LOL Can't get it anywhere else. And yeah H4831 is a good option. IMR 4350 does really well in my .30-06 and .270WCF with 180's and 150's.
 
Kept watching the net. They must of saw you coming. That's over twice to much. It should have been somewhere around $40.00 a # for a single lbs. and under.
after haz mat you're up there just as much. Me it was 107 bucks total. $79.99+19.99+7.42= $107.00
 
I've used both powders quite extensively. Rl-17 is a higher energy powder that will get you more velocity than h4350. However rl-17 is not as stable as h4350. Also, with rl-17 being a hotter powder it eats throats like crazy. Rl-16 is a good blend of both. I get better velocity with it over h4350 and its very stable. Hoever its a very dirty powder and has caused me issues with carbon in thr throat.
So with all that said my personal preference is h4350. It just flat out works
Was about to bring that up, R17 burns really hot. Three shots and you can fry eggs on your barrel.
