Hornady 7mm 180 eld-m terminal performance (pics)

I am a big fan of the ELD-M. No failures so far on two bull elk and a pile of mule deer.

Per N. Foster's advise I have been top loading a 160 Partition with 162 ELD-M rounds below it in the magazine. Then if I jump something inside of 150 yds or so I just hit it with the partition, if its further out, I eject the partition and fire off the ELD-M. This in a 280 Rem.

My 7RM gets 180 ELD-M rounds only but all my recent shots on game have been inside of 500, so the 280 has gotten all the love lately.

Do you find your POI to be close enough between the two loads or do you need to dial a correction if you move to ELD-M's?

I have my love in the 147 eldm. Sucks sorting out that 2000 count box when it shows up though. I shoot matches with them and hunt with the small piles of long and shorts.

I might have gotten lucky, I changed the powder charge about .5gr to get an almost exact cold bore POI as the ELD-M. I was expecting seating depth changes too but it was unnecessary.

Theres not much out there on this bullet other than Nathan Foster documenting som results on it. Going off what he has experienced I decided to try it for my self. I'm shooting them out of my Remington 700 long range 7mm Rem mag. Using rl-26 I'm launching them at 2959 fps. I shot a decent NH 9 point Saturday evening. The shot was about 50-75 yards. He ran approximately 75 yards before expiring. I didnt make the best shot on him because it was getting dark and I needed to turn my illumination on but he was looking right at me so the less movement I did the better. Anyway, I got him skinned out and so for from what I'm seeing it did its job very well. Here's a pic of the entry. 7mm sized hole. He was quartering to me slightly. Hit the point of the shoulder busting it all to heck. View attachment 159738This is the inside of the ribcage. The right side being entry. It's hard to tell but it's about the size of a golf ball. Seems the bullet held together quite nicely after going through the shoulder.View attachment 159741Because of where I hit him, the vitals were not hit square. It liquified the lower lobe of his left lung and hit the top of the heart. I'll know more when I actually butcher him on what the bullet did when it hit the shoulder. Shot two elk with the 180s last year and they performed great.




I recovered the bullet from the spike at 965 in the offside hide and it weighed 112 grains.

I am shocked that the Remington 9.25" twist will stabilize the 180g eldm, that is a pleasant surprise! I thought that it would take an 8-8.5" twist!

The only thing is when it gets below 40 degrees the BC starts to go down hill. It's still stable but doesn't have the full BC. In summer weather I was running a .395 g7.

Also I'm running .351 G7 for shots past 600 yards. 8 twist 28 nosler at 3109 FPS.

I'm not seeing the high bc of others.

It's kinda strange that people get different results. The 395 g7 worked perfect out to 1000 yards and multiple occasions.

The difference is from .351 and .395 is 10 inches at 1000 yards. Are you just on the target at 1000 yards or constantly hitting bullseyes. Just curious??
