Help with Right handed / left eye dominant teen shooter

It really gives us the confidence to go forward and train. She didn't seem fazed by the fact she will be changing hands and shooting left handed. I'll post some before and after targets in the near future.

Thanks again all. I knew asking here would get a positive response.

My son is also right handed and left eye dominant I was fortunate enough to catch it at 5 years old while he was shooting a BB gun. Soon after started him shooting left handed he is going on 14now and very efficient with rifle or shotgun as others have said switch to left handed and get lots of practice the young age seems to help with switching ( not set in there ways like us old guys)

With a pistol you can shoot with the right hand and left eye by rotating the pistol slightly in the hands so the sights line up with the left eye.

With a rifle you probably need to shoot left handed so the sights are lined up with the left side of the body.

I never experienced any trouble with eye dominance, right/right. so i wasn't aware in regards to my girls.
But it looks as there isn't any real issue just a small change and lots of practice.
Thanks

I am left handed but right eye dominant. I shoot everything right handed and have been told it is best to shoot with dominant eye. Growing up I shot left and right it just depended on which way was easier. Slowly I moved to right side to stay.

Tell her to close her left eye. I know people all like to keep both eyes open but no reason you have to. It might be easier than having her have to retrain her whole body.

I was about 5 when they found out I was RH/ left eyed dominant. Switched to shooting left handed and have never looked back. I think she needs to start shooting left handed as some of the other guys have said. It will come natural to her in no time. I actually don't own any LH firearms...I've thought about trying it sometime lol.
Good luck!

I am right handed left eye dominant. What convinced me to start shooting some left handed was when I got into archery. The shop owner was a competitive shooter for 30 years and said he always shot right handed. Once he switched to left handed he said he was shooting better than he ever did right handed in a matter of weeks. Now I haven't fully converted to right handed shooting (shotgun is the hardest for me and likely the area to most improve) but i can tell it helps and I wish I would have started lefty instead of going the right handed route early on.

I honestly think if people shot with their eye dominance we would see lefty guns as much more common.

Hi all.
My eldest daughter is old enough to get her minors permit and shoot handgun at the range. All good till the point where she starts to shoot and only manages a few hits .
Its her first visit to the range and i'm standing behind her , so I cant see that she has both eyes open, trying to shoot right eye.
Later at home we were talking and I just asked her to close her left eye, as it turns out she cant but she can close here right .
back to the range and would you know it , Right eye closed and she has improved remarkably.

So is this OK.

I have no experience with this and would appreciate some guidance .
That is interesting that she can't close her dominate eye!? I am prior military police and law enforcement and we had to learn to shoot with both hands. I was able to close either eye, even though I am right eye dominate. I know people that have learned to shoot weak handed, so they could use their dominate eye. I shoot PRS and one of the top Jr. shooters in the country is Conner Jeter who I shot with at a competition this year. He is right handed and left eye dominate. So he learned to shoot left handed and like I said, he is one of the top Jr. shooters in the country. So I would think if she really wants to shoot dominate eye, learn to shoot off handed. It will become natural to her and she won't even think about it after a while. If she wants to shoot strong handed, then maybe try putting a patch over the dominate eye. This will train her brain to use her weak eye and maybe she can learn to close her dominate eye. Hope this helps!

I am left eye dom and right handed. I shoot a bow right handed. I shoot a rifle, shotgun left handed. I shoot pistol right handed. I am not setting the world on fire but when I set my mind to it and train I have placed in the top of my local comp groups in all shooting disciplines. I also tend to use my right eye with spotting scopes, so strange. Because of my weirdness I don't generally feel anyone needs to be forced to do anything that is not feeling natural to them. Usually they just a tweak or two and they are good to go.

Over the summer I bought my daughter a pellet gun, she was having a hard time shooting and I noticed she was same way, left eye dominant but right handed. We tried the left handed shooting thing but she couldn't get that down. So we took her shooting glasses and blacked out the left eye and told her to shoot both eyes open. After about a week we were able to take the tape off of her glasses. She can shoot sub moa groups with her AR now with no tape on her glasses. Is that the correct way? I don't know but it worked well in her case. She can shoot open sights or scope with no difference.

As with many others, both my daughter and son have same issue. I tried getting them to shoot left handed but a trip to the eye doctor and glasses seemed to work better. They had hard time shooting left handed, which sucked because I am a lefty and have a large number of left handed guns.

Couldn't shoot my bow fer crud until I started doing it LH. Funny thing, except for calibrating sights, didn't need to change a single thing on my bow to get it spot on. Now shoot a RH bow LH, just like my rifles.
