Help Wanted!

My wife and I have given up on the possibilities of ever hunting Alaska or Alaska, so we're gonna attempt some less expensive, hopefully easier to accomplish hunts in the Lower 48.

Our thoughts are pigs/hogs and maybe a Javelina hunt.

So, some suggestions on who to contact for hog hunting. A hunt that's reasonably priced, with pretty high success rates. We realize that hog hunting on public ground is likely near impossible. Especially as, we're not as mobile as we were years ago.

As for Javelina, what state would you folks recommend for a DIY hunt, that doesn't require you to be an Olympic athlete to hunt? What state, area/region would you suggest for inexperienced, older folks?

Oh and, we're not "long range" hunters/shooters, so we'd like to limit our shots to around 300 yrds and under!

I guess it's time to spend a little of our kids inheritance! 😁

Thanks in advance! memtb
Honestly, I have not really looked recently but two years ago I was searching to the best of my ability. I was looking in the pacific northwest as someone told me that there were some options up there, but after checking with wildlife people in Salem and around the state, it turns out that those had all dried up. The only place I could find that would be a possible place was in Texas. I don't have any contacts in that direction, but I know some of them are advertising online. Good luck. Hope you have a great hunt.

I've re-read your post about the impetus for your interest in a hog hunt. Interestingly (to me) – that is that is how it all began for my wife and me as hunting partners. I had been 'hunting' with a group of interesting characters in Northern California for hogs on public land. We went at least 3 or 4 times a year for 2 ½ years– and never saw a hog. Poop: yes tracks: yes. Hogs: NO.

I brought her along one time – just to pass the underwear test – and after we got home she told me we were all full of baloney and we were just camping with guns! OOOWWWWWW!!

I would have been p'd off BUT - SHE WAS RIGHT!

By odd circumstance, 30 days later, we joined Safari Club International. At a local auction my wife bought a Holister, CA-based hog hunt – guided – on private land – on a barley farm. Oh, My Goodness! Hogs everywhere – everywhere! It looked like a drunk someone in a Sherman tank had spent hours doing donuts in the barley. To say the farmer wanted to see a spanking issued was an understatement.

We never went 'Camping With Guns' again! Life Changing. Simple as that!

If you just want a place you can drive to drive the rv up to Ak. It's a great drive probably even better if you aren't trying to do it as fast as possible.
On great advice from a Homer local, we took the Cassiar Mountain Highway. Awesome drive. Totally wild. Almost 700 miles between gas stations. It was the best part of our trip. 35,000 Miles in 3 1/2 weeks. San Juan Capistrano to Homer via the Marine Highway. What a fabulous trip.

The cassiar is pretty remote for sure!!!
You have to remember Memtb is from the city and might get nervous in the wild😂😂

For sure ……we're intimidated by wide open spaces😁.

Especially so, if the wide open spaces are 700 miles between fuel stations. At around 8 mpg when towing, we'll come up just a little short on fuel…..by about 450 miles! 🙀 That would require a lot of "jerry cans" in the truck bed to attempt that!

Don, I did too! When we were younger, she carried quite a few elk quarters off of the mountain. I think that those days are now behind us! ☹️ memtb

I drove the Cassier highway in December 1994. It was a beautiful drive, although it is dark a lot that time of the year. My trip was from Anchorage to Casper Wyoming.

If you are up for a road trip come to Florida. This is one of the ranches that you can have options on what you take, not as many as Texas. Then on the way back to Wyoming you can hunt other states.
