Supposedly the short/wide powder column and case shape make for a more efficient burn with less velocity variation. It's why so many competitors prefer the 308 to the 30-06.

The 308 Win compared to the 30-06 is not a short wide powder column.

Short yes, but not wide. And I will generally take the 30-06 over the 308 Win 9 times out of 10. And, I have both.

The standard .30-06 is so anemic, I would rather have my .308 Win any day. For the record, I also have a custom 26" .30-06 AI, but even though it's an AI, I'm still not a huge fan of it. Thinking about rebuilding it into a .280 Sherman.

My vote is for a 243 Ackley improved with a 1-8 twist. Use superformance powder. As fast or faster than a 6-284. Less powder. Lighter action. Use for varmints or big game and 600 to 1000 yard targets. Low recoil . Add a JP 3 port comp or eliminator.

Well I have the same issue going on. I was 100% sold on a 270 WSM. But the OAL is really an issue so why chamber in something you cannot take full advantage of. (I did that once with a 284 Win) I sold that rifle because it didn't serve its purpose. The OAL was always an issue and to realize the real capabilities of it I had to run it like a single shot. I do not want to do that again.

So now I'm truly considering a Sherman for my first trek into a wildcat. There seems to be a ton of help here and Rich has answered all of my nagging questions. I was originally thinking 270 SS then Rich introduced me to the SST lineup. I shot a 25-06 for years (it was my grandfathers rifle) so the 25 has a place in my heart. Blackjack seems to be producing great bullets. Looks like the 25 SST will fill the need for me. The OAL will never be an issue. It is more than adequate for any game in my area. It will also be a conversation piece of sorts.

I have asked the Blackjack guys a few questions and I'm sure I will nag Rich some more. I'm really thinking this 25 SST fits the bill for me.

Sorry a bit long winded but I have spent hours reading and thinking about this.

Might want to take a look at the 6.5 Short Sherman. If you build a 6.5 PRC on a short action you will have 88 thou of bullet bearing area buried in the case with the Hornady 143 or 147. I'm building one on a medium action and thinking about building a Short Sherman on a S/A.

Rich has answered questions for me. I'm trying to decide between 6 SST, 6.5 SST, & the 25 SS. Like you I had an awesome 25/06 at one time.

Which is why I didn't throat my PRC reamer for either of those bullets, due to their looong bearing surface.

My freebore is set up for the Berger 140 VLD, which happens to work great for the 150 Sierra as well. I would never throat around the Hornadys, as you would have a monster jump with any other bullet, which may or may not work.......

I'm biased but check the wind and drop and energy #'s on the 25 SST.

0.345 G7 at 3300-3350 fps.

Really, it depends on the rifle's role. 25 SST, 6.5 SST, 7 SST. It's all good if you practice and execute.

Sadly, there's just nothing I need a 30 or 338 for in the near future when these short efficient cases and efficient bullets fly so well.

I guess I am biased also. I have been waiting for three decades for a 1/4 bore bullet that will outperform the 6.5 mm with less recoil. The 6mm is left to a few tasks like varmints and coyotes, of which a .257" bullet can handle also.

Factory freebore is .188". I built both of mine on 700 L/A's, so I went with .200" freebore, just to make it even.....ha ha. My OAL with my lot of 140 VLD's in the lands a hair is 2.995".
