A carbon ring only exists in rifles that are owned by shooters who also own a bore scope. If you don't own/use a bore scope, you've got nothing to worry about.

I'd guess most of the guys who were beating the carbon ring bandwagon have never polluted their barrel with an actual bronze brush... Most are also inexperienced enough to not be able to "feel" a bore for the true condition. I'm also not afraid to hit a barrel with some brush drag with a bit of JB paste... Heck, if I'm irritated enough I might just use JB weld and be done with it.
I've got decent eyes but am a bit farsighted so I can see most of what I need to with the naked eye... A borescope would just be another toy that sits in the corner to me.
