Hammer Bullets compressing my powder charge.

OMG! Yes, it was too long and then you shove it too deeply. @GLTaylor provided you excellent pictures in #135 as a reference on bullet rings but you still did NOT learn from it. If you look at your Hornady manual, it clearly says COL: 3.34". You clearly do NOT know what you are doing. Everybody is trying to help you but you still NOT clearly getting it. I am out.

Are you saying I shouldn't measure my rifle max OAL and adjust it for most accurate length and just use what in the book.
 
Ok...Now we are getting somewhere. I am going to save you a lot of time and anguish. You will benefit greatly from buying the Hornady Lock n load OAL gauge and the appropriate 270 win case that goes with it. What you do is screw the case that you bought with the OAL gauge onto the OAL gauge, and slide the bullet inside the neck and then with it all attached, you slide the case into the chamber and use the little plastic rod to push the bullet up until it hits the rifling of the barrel. You then turn the little side screw so that the rod will not move which will keep the bullet at the point where it touched the rifling. You then measure the base of the case to the ogive with your Hornady comparator to get your measurement to the rifling. This will tell you what your MAX OAL is for YOUR rifle. That way, you can start seating the bullet back away from the rifling of the barrel.

Looking at the picture of your mechanical caliper it appears to me you have your bullet seated just over 3.0., SAMMI is 3.34, why are you seating it so deep? It looks to me you could move the bullet out much further. Your mechanical caliber looks to be reading 3.040 not 3.40.

What started this was I haven't loaded copper before and wasn't sure about the rings on the bullet and thought would be a good starting point that I could adjust when I needed to. I know that is not what I need to do now it was the first one and I knew this was a problem and thought I would ask for help. Sorry I gave you a guss without go to get the exact number. I can't move it out far enough for the powder not to be compressed was my point to start with.

The slang thrown around here is problematic....
One that keeps getting me is ....case head and case base...

"If you stand a cartridge on it's head it can stand alone..."
"If you stand it on its base the bullets gets in the way..."

Definitions...?????
case head....the end the primer goes in...(doesn't food go into the head)...bullet)
case base...the end that holds the bullet...(doesnt fecal matter come out our base)....i think you get the picture)

I hear these quite a lot.....which is correct.....
Dont make exceptions....get correct terminology and apply it...

I get what you are saying but the base as I have always understood it is part of the case head. Otherwise they wouldn't call it CBTO (cartridge base to ogive).
