Getting in mountain shape with no mountains around?

We have a couple of stair stepper machines at our local gym and I'm thinking besides all the other cardio and weight training I need to hit one of those stair steppers every once in awhile.
They will kick your butt. Best device for training those legs when you're unable to hike UP a mountain….altitude is something totally different though.

True that. I lived at 8700ft elevation in Colorado for several years and was used to it but people that came to visit were a bit challenged.

The best cardio fitness you can possibly be in is important, as well as staying very very well hydrated. A large part of altitude sickness is dehydration.
 
I made my 5th sheep hunt this year in the yukon, and can honestly say I finally have it dialed in shape wise. I made a few major changes to my workout and it was huge difference. No much i can do for elevation living at 70ft, but hopefully this helps someone.
Weighted lunges and squats
Rucking, alot, save the 50+ pound stuff for the last 2 months
Stairclimber 2-3 hours a week. 1 hour or 200 flights a session, with weighted pack on(last 2 months were with 60lbs)
The Chad(modified) Once a week, 55lb pack, 1000 18" step ups. Its boring and sucks but it works.
