Fun, cheap hot rods?

It doesn't have to be a real hot rod. Might be tough to eek out a ton of potential in a SA .473 bolt face round. Just something that'll wiggle the steel at a grand or more.

I would do a 22-250AI or a 22 creed. My father has a 22-250AI. Awesome little rifle. However when the barrel is gone its going to be a 22 creed. Fireforming is not really our cup of tea and 22 creed has plenty if brass available. New 22 cal bullets are running right with the 6s now and they are a lot cheaper. Get one of those 2 in a 7 or 7.5 twist and have fun!

243ai!!! 105's at 3300 85's at 3600. I haven't tried the new LRT however a 6.5wsm with a 147-160 should be quite fun. You can open up a bolt if you go that route

You have an action and stock. Cheap hotrod would be to use a 24" Rem takeoff in 243 rechambered to 6mm-284, totally cleans up existing chamber. Excellent Lapua 6.5-284 brass can be necked down easily. Will shoot 55 gr varmint bullets up to 4200 fps.(great for varmint calling, zeroed at 100 it is only 7" low at 350 yds) It does come with a 1 in 9.25 twist so it is limited to 95 gr bullets. Currently getting 3495 fps with Berger classic hunter.

Due to being a barrel burner the use of a takeoff barrel mitigates the cost. In my case I have a lathe and do that work myself.

I like my plain old 22-250? But it does have a 8 twist barrel so I have more bullet options. It has really no recoil. I think with supervision a 6 or 7 year old could shoot
it without problem. Ground hogs really don't like 70 Gr. VLD's!

Will it fit in factory magazines or will it be a single shot?

Something to think of:
Others have raised the concern of brass stretch and weakness in the rear lug design. A 243AI could help you squeeze a lot of performance out of this platform while keeping pressure manageable for the 788.

I wanna build a fun range toy. Love the 28 nosler for most things walking, but man, it's spendy to send some serious roundage downrange! I have an 'ol Remington 788 in 22-250 that I've always wanted to screw with. 22 creedmoor is intriguing, 22-250 AI— a 6mm something-or-other oh my! Use is LR steel, varmints maybe competition... I don't know....
Requirements:
Relatively inexpensive to operate
Low to no recoil ( will also have MB/ can)
Standard bolt face short action
Will have fast twist for caliber bbl
Quality brass that's available
Readily available high BC Bullets that are available

I'm kinda itchy for something cool but not too cool... ya know?
Sell me on something!
i like the .260 rem shooting 140 gr. easy to shoot and easy on the barrel ! ive used it for prarie dogs to 600 yd. competition !
