First ar-15...what scope?

Not admitting to having one.........but since i...i mean if i did....i wouldn't cut down too much in power.....those bullets can go a long ways....or so I've been told...........
I might have a Leupold 4-12 with varmint reticle.......
Or course....if i had one.......maybe...

So I bought my first ar, 223 barrel, have other long range setups so I don't want to limit myself on range, but wanting to scope it relatively cheap, Doesn't need to have mind blowing optics.
What's everyone use for hunting scopes on their ar type guns?

On another note, what are some good varmint bullets for a 223, can it sling the 60-70 fast enough in an ar to take advantage of the bigger bullet or am I better with 50grainers?
Vortex all the wsy

i like lower power scopes for my AR's. i have a 2-10 vortex PST on my precision AR. a primary arms 1-8 on my grendel that i use for deer hunting. an SWFA 3-15 would be good. the vortex strike eagle is another good option. they have a bunch of magnification ranges and .223 BDC reticles that have solid reviews

I'm a huge believer of running a good quality LPVO on an general use 223/556 carbine.

I personally run a Trijicon Accupower 1-8x on my primary 16" carbine in a LaRue SPR-E mount (I run nose to charging handle so the extra eye relief is appreciated). The reticle is awesome for both close in 1x and detailed/precision use out as far as I have shot with it (~500yds). Locking turrets are nice too as I use this for run-n-gun competitions and dont need to worry about getting knocked out of adjustment.

I paid around $900 for mine, and have actually been seeing some really good deals as low as $750-800 right now (MidwayUSA, Optics Planet etc).

If I had a little more money I'd step up to the NX8 1-8 just because it's considerably lighter than the Trijicon.

If I didnt have the money for the Trijicon, the Strike Eagle is your best bet.

Obligatory photos (yes the reticle isnt level, this was just me dry-fitting the scope in an old LT104 mount to check eye relief before my SPR-E showed up, rings were hand tight with my T-handle wrench)

I use 55 grain Hornady Interlocks at about 3200 fps. Works great for coyotes and bobcats. I have a 4-14 x 44 scope that does the job very well. Check out blackhoundoptics.com for a great scope at a great price. Comes with a transferable lifetime warranty, rings, flip up caps and more. You won't be disappointed. Use code 6235097 for an additional 5% off and the shipping is free.

I don't go above 3.5 power on the low end on hunting ar's, that's just my personal preference. I have several Leupold 3.5-10 and a SWFA 3-15 I use now but I'm in the market for a good 1-8. I'm thinking that should hit the sweet spot on a ar in 223.

An LPVO is an excellent choice if you want to spend the cash. The other best low cost choice, IMHO: the SWFA Super Sniper 10X42 fixed, as mentioned by another poster.

Originally designed for the Spec. Ops and contracted to the gov. at $700 ea. The scopes rights were sold and another mfg. produced them for the civilian market. I own one on an 18" 1:8 Wilde chamber Blackhole bbl. SWFA offers the original design at $299.95 with a 5 Mil rear focus reticle. The Navy used this scope out to 1,000 yds. It has SWFA's mil quad reticle, advantage; your target will not become obscured by the reticle's cross hair.

Budget LVPOs from weaver and vortex offer a lot of bang for the buck IMO. For my dedicated hunter I really like the VX6 2-12. Little better glass but not really suited for anything CQ defense related. For that red dots/holos are king. LVPO is the jack of all trades. Performance value available at each price point.

I Just put a 2.5-15x42 Trijicon credo on my 6mm Grendel. Only shot it once but I love it so far. Exposed elevation turret and good illumination. Dim enough at night and visible during the day. Glass is as good as my Zeiss V4. I would recommend a 1.375 mount on a higher power scope where you're getting low on the cheek weld. If you go with a 1-x scope get a 1.5 plus height for more heads up shooting and less barrel in the field of view at 1x

Check out Blackhound optics too. Glad to pass my personal results, but they are limited.

I wonder how that scope can be on 8.5 power with the small objective lens
Because I have a Rock River match A2 and a 26"bull bbl RR upper in the safe with my RR 22" standard A2, I don't intend the basic A2 to be "long range".
It works good as a rainy day and/or pinker. I found a deal on Leu. VX5 1-5 pwr which is very nice. Only thing I would change is reticle. Once I got used to mil marks on reticle a plain duplex leaves me guessing.
It is mounted on a Leu. Riser with Leu. Medium 35mm PWR rings.
