Favourite .257 wby powder?

One more vote for 7828 SSC and I tried the others while doing load development. 7828 with Fed 215 primers in Weatherby brass will shoot tiny little clover leafs with everything from 80 to 117 grains.

I ve found on the fast side R22 and Imr7828 are good. If you ve got slower powder it loves that, R26, H1000, R33 …..

Since mine is also a hunting, max point blank range setup I don't worry about temperature sensitivity and go for velocity with reasonable pressure. With 110AB and a 26" barrel 3500 fps is where I ve worked up to. Both R26 and R33 get there. R33 takes 11 grs more powder but seems lower pressure wise based on bolt lift, primer roundness.

Good luck, you ll have a ball with it. Give her lots of time between shots or you ll be barrel shopping soon!!

In half a dozen barrels, R#22 with a 215 primer with both the 100g-115g bullets, hammered small groups with speed. My re barrels all have zero to .020 freebore, very short and barrels last a very long time.

In my short freebore 7 STW, 7828 and R#22 are kissing cousins with 120's and 140's.

You guys that love this cartridge, I hope one day that you can have a custom barrel put on a rifle with no more than .070 freebore. Pac Nor has a short freebore reamer, and their 3 groove super match, 10T, shoots the 100's at 3850 and the 115's at 3600 with Fed 215's and R#22. I have seen the same with the Lilja and Krieger 10T barrels. The nosler 100g Partitions shoot half inch groups in this barrel, and the 100g Hornady btsp is my preferred bullet in 100g, never fails. 80g barnes ttsx at 4200 does not suck in group size(R#19), but I have only shot them for a short while.

My nephew is seriously recoil-sensitive. A gunsmith chambered an X Caliber 9T barrel for him with .020 freebore, and he is shooting the 110g Nosler Accubond and the Berger 115g VLD hunting at 3600 on a 25 or 26" barrels with groups sub 3/8" on three-shot groups. The gunsmith installed a Gentry muzzle break that throws a lot of the concussion Forward.

Recoil-sensitive nephew is now making some incredible shots, and no deer has ever moved at impact, DRT with him ALWAYS seeing the bullet impact on the animal...he is in love with his new rifle, on his third season now, hogs and deer.

I see no practical use in a Modern gun chamber having .300 freebore, .030 is much more practical in this cartridge for reloaders.

A friend used my zero freebore reamer to chamber for a heavy gun for shooting rock chucks. 30" Hart 10T barrel of his shoots the 100's at 4000 fps into tiny groups that are in the 1/4" area with three shot groups. I have tried to talk him into shooting the 85g Nosler ballistic tips and the 87g Speer, but there are none to be found.

I like 7828 SSC but a 92-grain Hammer with IMR 4350 gives me over 3700 fps and a decent group.

@Jbumblebee

I would encourage you to try some R#19 with a fed 215 or cci 250. 87's are dong 4130 in one barrel I have, and the 92 Hamers are a bullet I should try.
That seems like it's be too fast a burn rate wouldn't it? Heck I don't really go any faster than 4831/rl22 in my 270 Winchester and it's waaaaay less overbore.

Edit: realize we're talking hammers, I've heard the same rules don't apply

I'll make a note of that and try it next year when I'm done hunting. Right now I'm all set and don't want to change anything before heading out for deer.

Thanks!
