My next step is to take a case and progressively cut it shorter to see if i can pinpoint the location of the issue in the chamber.
I dont have a reamer in 222. I did dye chem a case but I'm not seeing anything.Do you have a good reamer for that chambering ? Could you put it in and turn it by hand a little to see what it feels like ? Or you might soot a case and see what is causing it to bind .
I used a once fired case from that chamber and a full length resized case that had been fired in that chamber. The fired case requires a cleaning rod to remove, the FL resized is better but still has to be forced out.You mentioned that you used once fired brass. It is possible that the brass was originally fired in a chamber that was slightly bigger than your current one. I assume you fl resized the brass. This will allow it to chamber but the brass springback will still make the brass tight if the size difference between the two chambers was too great. This usually happens lower down on the case where the brass is thicker (stiffer). Like it did with you. Use new brass and your problem will go away. Do not polish your chamber until it is slick. This will result in too much bolt thrust as the round is fired due to the case wanting to piston back since it has no grip on the chamber walls.
Thanks. I dont have a 222 reamer. But i may be renting one if i cant get this ironed out, it is a factory take off barrel. If all else fails ill .223 it. But i really want a 222.From What I remember from My professors at Lassen College, your posts here, and what I have seen over the last 12-13 years in Northern Nevada, I have something to suggest. Do you have a 222 reamer? if so, see if you get any metal off the front half of the chamber when you hand ream the chamber. I had a really finicky 444 Marlin come in with nearly the exact same set of symptoms. I reamed the chamber by hand and found out that the chamber had only been rough reamed and the finisher was needed to make the front of the chamber big enough to extract live and shot rounds. also, I have never used any grit rougher than 1200 to polish a chamber. I have gone up to 2,500 or 5,000 with phenomenal results on my 17 Rem.
just my 2 cents worth of advice.
Ill look at that. How do your fired cases measure compared to the specs for that cartridge are they round at the shoulder and at the base are they the right length just some thoughts .
I timed the bolt and re soldered it. I have about 90% contact. How much primary extraction do you have?
I don't know what that means. Primary extraction is a length measurement............... I have about 90% contact.
