Elk Caliber?

I ended up returning the weatherby for a refund because I got it back with no work done on it as it was "within their tolerances" or something like that! So I have no rifles at the moment and have to pick one.

Well that throws you into a whole new ball game. To me the thoughts of "I have to buy a new rifle" is a pretty cool problem to have. There are a lot of good suggestions on here. The 300 Win is always a good option, or a 300 Ultra Mag is a fantastic choice. I would go with the Ultra if it were me and I wanted a 300. I have been working on a Cooper M52 Long Range chambered in 28 Nosler for my dad. And to say that I am impressed with it is an understatement. He has not shot much the last few years, and he is shooting clay pigeons at 800 yards with it. It is running the 180 Berger at 3190 fps. The only down side I can find with the 28 Nosler is the limited factory ammo and only one source of brass at this point. It all depends on what your resources are for reloading and having time to get ready.

IMHO. Beyond point of impact,,, A 6.5 Creedmoor, with a muzzle velocity of 2600fps / .509bc - 140 grain ABond, will have approx 1300 ftlbs of energy at 400 yards & 1140 ftlbs of energy at 500 yards. A 7mm mag with a muzzle velocity of 3000fps / .531bc - 160 grain ABond will have approx 2080 ftlbs of energy at 400 yards & 1857 ftlbs of energy at 500 yds. I owe it to myself and the Elk, to keep a min of 1500 ftlbs of energy / 1800 fps, available at the time of impact.

I would really like to agree with this, but that muzzle velocity sounds a little anemic for the Creedmore.

It all depends on how far a person needs, wants or is capable of shooting accurately. My 7mm Allen Magnum will still have approximately 1850 fps and 1522 fpe at 1,300 yds. ;)

One of the members here who has the same chambering but a longer barrel than I do has cleanly shot and killed an Elk at a mile. Running the data for his load shows an impact at approximately 1614 fps and 1152 fpe. Like with any hunting situation, bullet placement is key.

I dont think anyone runs they're creeds at 2600. Most guys end up in the ball park of 2800-2850 with 140s and 147s both.

Could be? But most of the commercially available load data starts to drops off at 2700fps MV. Which calculates to 1416 ftlbs energy at 400 yards & 1249 ftlbs energy at 500 yards.

I wasnt arguing that the 6.5 creed is enough for elk. I personally wouldnt do it when I've got bigger weapons. Just clearing up that 2600 fps was alittle on the light side.
