I bought my youngest a 7-08 when she started elk hunting at 12 years old. She liked an elk and a deer the next 4 consecutive years with it.

Another well proven choice is the old .270. Bought one of these for my 12 year old grandson and he killed 3 elk with it. I have several buddies that use them and have taken elk out to 600 yards.

I love the 7mm-08 for all the reasons you mention...enough energy to "get er done" but not too crazy. That said I hear great things about the 7 PRC as a do it all cartridge. I'd throw one other out there--I recently had Fierce build me a custom 6.8 Western and that rig is a Thor's Hammer, but recoil and muzzle blast are pretty manageable with the 165 gr Nosler ABLR. When you step up to 175 gr Sierra Game Changer in a warm load it becomes a bit more unruly

My neighbor's 15 year old girl shot a cow with my seekins ph2 7prc this year and she was excited about its lack of recoil. She previously shot a 270 win. I have a lil bastard 4 port brake on it and it's a hunting set up but not super light. And this was loaded for me running a 175 eldx at 3050.
