Diverticulitis

Great information guys. I am a basic eater, meat, potatoes and some rolls. I do eat rice and corn, but I have not been able to pinpoint the cause. I do eat salat with sunflower seeds when we do a steak so that could contribute. The abscess is what has them concerned as it is 4mm large. The antibiotics are shrinking it quickly and the pain has been greatly reduced in the 48 hours on antibiotics.

The surgeon said there would be 2 or 3 very small incisions and no colostomy bag. I have not gotten a second opinion but may consider that.

I figured some of you would have asked what all guns I have and how to get in touch with my wife if things go South!!! 🤣
I have a friend with a very large collection that we semi-jokingly tell we couldn't wait for his "sale". He said he has already informed his wife how to dispose of them.

Just a general thought. Not all colorectal surgeons are equal in skill and talent. Do some googling and look for reviews of the docs in your area. If not a lot of good choices, be willing to drive.
The procedure is rather basic in nature. The challenging part is the condition of the colon where they want to do the resection. If they suspect(under visualization) that it's compromised, then you have a colostomy bag for a bit. The healing aspect of the bowels is a little tricky. They are flexible and stretch, but not necessarily tough. So, when they reconnect, the tissue needs to be in good shape. If it's compromised, the resection could fail to heal properly or cause dehiscene(connecting parts pull apart). All this leads to sepsis and potential death. BUT the colostomy bag ensures the colon stays under minimal tension and use while it recovers. This compensates for compromised tissue.

I've seen many of these procedures and wouldn't hesitate to have it done. The situation I described above is much less common. I also would it done laparoscopically(robot or standard instrumentation) and not open. Have them do a 4pt TAP(nerve) block with Exparel to reduce trocar pain.

Confidence is key. Pick a doctor that YOU believe is the best. PM me if you'd like to talk live or have any specific questions.

I have no choice but to have it done. Just met with the surgeon and he said they do this all with a robot?? He said we have to get the infection gone first. 10 days of antibiotics.

Thanks for the information.
Hang in there, Brother! As you already know, the LRH community is the preying type. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Be strong, and God bless.

I have significantly reduced my carbohydrate, sugar, and processed foods intake—excellent news for the antibiotics' effectiveness.

Over five years ago, my wife and I started extensive estate planning for our two sons (33 and 35) to execute for such an occasion.

Again, hang in there!
