When in Rome, do as the Romans do. I'm not sure if they are running hounds there much anymore or not. I'm pretty sure though they may not be amenable to an outsider fussing about it. Especially someone who might be considered to be a Yankee

If you make the move, you will really like Arkansas. My brother moved his family back from Minnesota. I asked the kids what they thought of Arkansas. They said the biggest surprise was when people asked how you were doing, they really wanted to know how you were doing. They weren't just being polite. It's a beautiful state with heavy emphasis on the out doors. Very friendly people and very welcoming. It's a very well kept secret.

Come on gentlemen you are going to scare his kids. These are not deer hounds. They are house pets(small beagles) that are used to trail deer and rabbits in the thick stuff. My biggest adjustment to Arkansas was all the trees. I always thought I wanted a lot of trees. I had forty pine trees on a little over an acre. What a pain just cleaning up. Pine cones and needles every where.

Arkansas has a lot to offer any sportsman. Western AR is mountains. Much of it is public land open to hunting. After leaf drop you can shoot from one to the other, just like out west, and as far as you are man enough to hit one. From about the center to the eastern part of the State it is flat Mississippi river delta. Southern AR is mostly leased timber company delta land. It is Arkansas' deer factory. On good leases you could shoot a deer every morning till you run out of tags, and it isn't hard or expensive to get in a good lease. South Arkansas deer tend to be small with small racks. Delta cropland deer are much larger, and harder to get in on. Big beanfields offer very challenging shots. Arkansas has the best Brown Trout fishery in the world, and great opportunities for all warm water fresh water fish as well. Residents also have the opportunity to hunt black bear and elk. Waterfowl hunting is unequaled in the lower 48. We are a gun friendly state and most towns have some form of local competitive shooting. Great place to raise kids and a low cost of living. Yes, it is a very diverse State. In fact, I doubt any other State offers their residents limited drawings for Elk and Alligator. I lived in South AR for several years, close to LA. My sales territory included the DeQueen area & I know that region quite well. There is a lot of woods/thicket hunting but in places you have young clearcut and right-of-way opportunities as well, we had that plus Oil pipeline right-of -ways. So, a long range rifle is not out of place as one might think. I live in NE AR now at the edge of the Ozarks, East of Black River is Delta & West of the river is hills, shots can be in your face or one place I hunt can be 600 yards.
I think as long as you don't try to change the way the locals live & say up North we did it this way (I don't in any way believe you are one of those), I believe you will do just fine.
We are FAR from being a "shotgun State", we have a small area running North and South of Jonesboro like that, but all of the rest of the State, you will find the rules about as good as it gets. You can use a 223 or a 50 Cal. Barrett. No Yankee mag restrictions & no it does not cause huters to shoot 50 rounds. It is one of the most gun friendly States.
But for people that don't live here, you would not like it.

There is plenty. Where i hunt you can shoot as far as you are man enough.. NW arkansas is mountains. Valleys are pasture in much of it. You will be fine.

Full size trees here, not scrub. Trees go all the way to the tops of the hills. Terrain is steeper in NW Arkansas. After leaf drop you can shoot across canyons ( We call them Draws). Terrain varies wildly in the state. River delta is farmland dead flat with big soybean fields. South arkansas is pine thickets on paper company land. Ouacita Mountains in west AR are less steep and have thicker cover than the Boston mtns in NW AR. As you go west and north of Fayetteville it is open country with rolling hills.
Very nice, but we aren't in (Ar)Kansas anymore to get one of those.

I live in Dequeen. The local 4h shooting range has been saying for the last 2 years they are going to add a long range shooting range but it will only be around 700 yds if they ever do it . For now its only 100 yds . There are some large fields around that allow for long shots and high lines. Most everything is weyerhaeuser leases . Some of the best hunting is in pond creek wma lots of 160-180 class deer in there but its bow or muzzleloader only with a 2 day modern gun hunt but they only have a certain amount of permits .
