I like the .30 cal as theres such a large amount of choice and availabilty but the 338 does have higher bc bullets. I already have an ar10 in 308win so i got the small 308 choice as well. I suppose I could just have both. The 308 for up to 400yds the 300 win mag for up to 1k yds and the 338 for anything past that. I was thinking though the rum could take the 338 spot with how fast it can push a hevier bullet. I was thinking If a 300 rum isnt enough then trying to get a little closer to the target would probably be a better idea than more powder.
Getting closer to your target should always be goal #1. I know this is a long range forum, but going out with the intent of taking the longest shot possible is the wrong approach. Having said that, give Badlands bullets a look. They only go up to 205 gr for .308 but the bc is higher than the Cutting Edge 240 Lazer. I'm running the 175 in my win mag and the bc is dead on for me so far out to 900 yards. Which is further than I ever intend to shoot at animals. Codyadams has a huge thread going on the Badlands bullets with lots of info

If you want to shoot not only 1000 yds but 1300 yards, I think you are better off w .338 LM. It will also shoot 400 and 1000 yards too....

Out to 1000 and beyond the larger, heavier bullets with higher BCs are going to make a big difference....

Thats my 2 cents.

Anybody use a 300 win mag with the 220/230gr cutting edge bullets. Should i look at using something with a little more capacity like the 300 wby or the 300 rum. Has the shorter neck length on the win mag caused any problems when reloading these long bullets. I origanally wanted the rum but it seems there are very little rifles chambered in the caliber plus ammo and componets are very scarce. The win mag however is chambered in nearly every rifle out there and componets are easy to find and cheap. The wby of course is only chambered in wby rifles but i do like there rifles. Componets for the wby are not to scarce for the most part but they are definitely not cheap. So which of the 3 calibers would you recomend, looking to use as a up to 1300yd rifle. I like the laser line of bullets as they expand down to 1200fps which gives a lot of extra range/cushion to work with. Or should i skip all three and step up to a 338 lapua for these longer shots.
I have Weatherbys and while the actions are AOK, I'm not a fan of their barrel diameters - heat up quick and walk fast as a result. I'd take a close look at the 300 Norma Mag...incredible ballistics, but does require the Lapua bolt diameter and bolt face dimensions to manage the cartridge. For a good barrel that won't break the bank, check out McGowen where you can pretty close to fully customize a barrel to your action and have them chamber it for a decent price. If you're going long and will be utilizing the cutting edge bullets, consider greater than 27" and go with the 1:7 or 1:8 twist and send them a dummy round and they'll set the throat to the jump you desire.

you mentioned 1200 + yards shots but at what ? I shot them all 300 wby w/ 150 gr, 30-378 wby w/180 gr, 300 win w/ 165 gr , 338 LM w/ 215-250gr + 308 Norma Mag, 300 Savage, 300 H&H, and a few other 30 cal rounds. The terrain, game tells me which to shoot & carry . I load all my own ammo for the last 50 + years and enjoy HANDLOADING all this time meet some very interesting people along the way.
It's bullet placement all the time !!!!

I dont mind single feeding the bullets so mag length aint really a problem, I believe the CE bullets have to be single fed anyway as there so long. Is there a factory rifle that would have the accuracy required to make the long shots something like a browning xbolt, vanguard/mark v, christen arms, new model 70, tikka, or should i just go with a custom build. The 338 lapua improved is fireformed from standard lapua brass right. I want a round that has relatively available brass.
Cooper Montana Varmint. Single shot. Super accurate

Welcome to LRH and enjoy it! Because you have the 1300 yards requirement and Cutting Bullets, "I" would go with the .338 LM/I. Having said that I am building a .338 NMI because it does not need a 4.00" COAL to take advantage of the long bullets.

Below is a .338 NM case in a .338 LM CIP 3.875" magazine.

On that point. Where can I get an off the shelf 338 Norma Mag. here in Canada?Although I could have my smith make one. Then the hunt begins for the reloading supplies.

I got mine at https://www.unknownmunitions.com/product/lapua-brass/. Unfortunately, they do not ship to an individual to your end unless you know an importer/distributor on your side.

there's always a nice 338 NM OR Lapua or RUM ,for sale on this site for less than cost to build.I ve bought several great rifles on here . I have used a 338 NM for last 12 years, have a light packer and another one heavier for backup and plinkin

My son is running 275 grain CEB out of a edge. His velocities out of a 28" proof is 3009. Shoots great. A 265 or 250 grain in a CEB for a 338 cal would also be interesting due to velocity increase.

The simple answer is after 1300 hitting with a .30 becomes exponentially more difficult and requires very specific components (including military proprietary powders) and barrel twist. It can be done but that is the bleeding edge of the caliber. If your goal is to do Hathcock level shooting with a 300 shoot the most powder you can (if I recall his after Nam L/R competition rifle was chambered for 300 Wby) with a fast twist and heavy long bullet and enjoy the challenge. But for easier to accomplish 1300+ shooting the 338 LM was/is the logical solution to the problem. Most rifles chambered such are intended for long range and the off the shelf ammo can do the trick. Many manufacturers chamber it now in quality rifles. Either way you will get some fun long range aroma therapy!

300 PRC Hands Down.

Go 338 Allen Xpress. 300gr bullet won't drop below 1200fps until past 1900 yards.

Interested to hear the comments on this thread. Just one correction, at least Remington, Browing and Winchester made models chambered in 300 WBY. I own a Win Model 70 CRF in 300 WBY.
I have a 300PRC with 1-8 twist, I am shooting the 225 ELD Match and it shoots tiny groups. I have not shot it past 100 yards, however, what I am told with my 10MOA Murphy precision base and my VX6HD 3-18x44 scope it has the potential to shoot 1450 yards with a lot of variables. The PRC was designed to shoot 212-250 grn bullets. The 300PRC is right between the 300 win. and the 300RUM. and you can buy factory ammo in 212-250 grain bullets. I just ordered 100 pieces of Lapua brass. from Midwayusa. And milehigh seems to keep the Hornady 212 eldx and 225 eldm in stock for the 300 prc. Just a thought.
